The sushi was great and reasonably priced, the staff was friendly, and the service was outstanding. Best Japanese I’ve had in Springfield.

Went for lunch yesterday with my mom and sister. My sister ordered salad and got a soup and I ordered chicken and vegetables and got chicken and shrimp. Definitely a language barrier or just not listening. Food was good though.

Pleasant, but not impressive. Overpriced. I always walk into a place with a 5-star expectation. The initial treatment and the atmosphere are what start it off. Yamato has a friendly waitress and a nice set up. After that, it just goes downhill. The sushi was yummy. I had the rainbow roll. But it was $ 10 for a tiny, not well-made roll. It almost fell apart as I went to pick it up. Minus –1 star. The salad was cheap. Iceberg lettuce with yum yum sauce on the side. I like my ginger dressing. The salad was probably worth $ 0.25, but I paid more than that. Minus –1 point. I’m just going to lump the rest together, because it’s nicer than a 2, but deserves no more than a 3. The hibachi was bland. Overcooked chicken, minimal veggies, and fried rice(Chinese style). Tea is a re-watered bag. It just continues getting weaker and weaker. Soups are too salty. Spring roll was«cute.» Best thing I had was the plum wine. They do have a nice selection of imported wine and beer. Would I come here again? No. I’d prefer eating at Choe’s Bistro or Kabuki. The distance is worth it for quality food. Yamato: borderline ordinary-meh

It almost seems like Springfield has been under siege by Japanese restaurants in recent months! Sake, Sakura, and more have replaced the Chinese buffets around Bechtle Ave. However, the cream of the crop has to be the first one in the area: Yamato. While still providing all the standard Hibachi/teppanyaki favorites, Yamato keeps their prices down by cutting out the dinner-theater style show. If you’ve seen it already, you’re not really losing anything here. The food is still prepared in the same manner, on the big teppanyaki table, served up on massive trays. And really? The food is *tasty*. I’ve eaten at quite a few hibachi joints across the Miami Valley and Yamato’s version is easily the best. Their steak tips are tender and their rice is both flavorful and expertly cooked. And, rather than give you a tiny little cup of the traditional«yum yum sauce», Yamato gives each table a full bottle. Can’t beat that! While I’m not a sushi fan, Jules attests that Yamato’s sushi is right up there with Sakai’s in Troy, so I can’t argue with that logic. If you’ve done the hibachi show before and want the great meal without the high price, give Yamato a run. It’s well worth your time!

As I’ve said a million times, I really love good sushi. At best Yamato is mediocre and the service for this type of place seems a little weak. The sushi is ok. I’m not sure of the freshness of the fish. I’ve tried your standard rolls on the menu. Spicy tuna, yellow tail, California, eel etc. the rolls are really small compared to previous experiences, but its sorta made up by the fact you get like 10 – 12 pieces in a roll, as apposed to the standard 6. My entrées was New York strip and vegetables. Steak tips were tough, and the vegetables were ok. Oddly what ever they do to the carrots in the dish is awesome. Might as well be candy, they are so tender and sweet. Biggest gripe… I wish they would get rid of the stupid tiki cups that only hold about an ounce of your favorite drink. Haha I’ll probably eat here again because Springfield is no culinary capital.

This use to be a good restaurant, quality has gone downhill in the last two years. I’ve eaten here many times and now I won’t return. My meal arrived incorrect and the manager argued with me; terrible customer service. I’ve ordered sushi many, many times over the past two years and the last time the seaweed wrap was dried out and bitter tasting. I returned it and again yet another manager argued with me that there was nothing wrong with the sushi. I drive by every day and less and less cars frequent the parking lot. I won’t be returning either.

How NOT to treat ANY customers, ESP. a suuuuper sushi fan(me) who was sooooo excited to FINALLY have good sushi close by here in Springfield, Ohiooooo(and Mr. Picky-Reluctant Eater) –Don’t know what specials are being offered(smartass waitress answer, «sushi!» and don’t seem to care, so hungry cust. has to go out and check the board herself… –Don’t have place settings ready, not even chopsticks… –Have your bored looking cook(who’s apparenty more intested in watching The Wheel of Fortune on the TV overhead than doing his job correctly) send out a salad with no dressing(ooops!) and an entrée, teriyaki NY strip steak, with nothing but lukewarm meat and rice(oops again on the veggies?!?) Way to scare off Mr. «I’m afraid of just about anything that isn’t good olé’ American meat-n-potatoes!» There were only three tables occupied on the Thurs. night we came in for dinner, and the bored looking staff seemed to be working harder to stay awake than get their jobs done. I really hope we just hit a bad night, and will probably give this place another chance, if for no other reason than my blind love and devotion to sushi(their limited offering is not half bad!!!) Don’t blow it, Yamato… Hate to have to say«sayonara» to what could be a long, happy relationship!

Not impressed. Miso was good, seaweed salad was good. Hibachi grilled food, eh, not so great. Food came out kind of tepid. It was fresh, but just not hot. Note: this is not a «hibachi» restaurant where the food is prepared and cooked at your table. For the money, I’ve had better food … and gotten a «show».

Returned to Yamato for second time since it opened. It’s still a great place to get sushi in Springfield OH. We ordered the Yamato roll, Dragon roll and Spicy roll. Each roll costs about $ 10. All three are excellent. The Yamato roll is deep fried and crispy. We also ordered the chicken yakisoba. Unfortunately, it is similar to the lo mein from a local Chinese restaurant. The staff is still friendly and attentive. Overall, Yamato is still a great sushi restaurant!
