Just like Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign — this Punjab Sweets & Snacks no longer exists.

Well, it turns out Serena has closed. My wife called one day to order takeout and the guy on the phone said they’re closing for good. Anybody know what happened? I always got the impression that they weren’t doing all that well as certain menu items disappeared and it was never crowded when I went in.

Springfield is just full of surprises. In the same shopping area as Niralla and Hot Cakes & Bakes, you have a Pakistani restaurant that serves kabobs and sandwich wraps. What’s the difference between a Pakistani restaurant and an Indian restaurant? I’ll look into it and post a follow-up. But, in the meanwhile, competition is certainly stiff in the area because there are at least three nearby restaurants that does the same thing as Serena. There are others with the same idea of offering sweets and ice cream. A Ravi Kabob just opened up shop across the street. There’s a Mr. Chicken next door with Halal Fried Chicken and Shakes. I can’t tell you how Serena stands out among the competition but if do come, I suggest the $ 7.99 buffet. On my recent visit, the buffet included 10 dishes: one plain rice, one fried rice, four chickens, a fried okra dish, a lentil dish, a chickpea dish, and a spinach dish. And for a $ 7.99AYCE meal, this is an even better deal than Kabob Palace(Arlington, VA). I find the vegetable dishes taste better here but the meats tend to end up rather dry. And the naan bread was thick, chewy, and crispy on the outside. I walked away satisfied and stuffed silly. And for me, that’s good enough. Should you come? Why not. Would I recommend it to my friends? I’m not no real complaints based on my initial visit. Is it worth the trip? Only if you happen to be nearby. [Original Visit: June 28, 2009]

This place is very small and the selection of food is limited. Not a good deal for $ 7.99. Plus the service was poor. The guy just sat all day talking on the phone. I think Niralla is better but you have to go before 4pm for the buffet.

I love it. The food here is delicious. The staff is friendly and price is easy on the wallet. I think for the both of us, the two buffets totaled 12 or 13 dollars. Everything tasted homemade and it was very wholesome. I wasn’t hungry again for the rest of the day. They do catering as well. I am going to go back here again and again as long as they stick around. Food in the DC area is overpriced and really not worth the money. This place reminds me of going to eat in other cities where you can get generous portions of excellent food for not a lot of money — like in Chicago and other places. Check it out if you are in the area.
