We arrived and the place was closed. The old man inside waved us around the drive-through. When we got up to the window we told him we were from out of state had never eaten at a Shipley’s donuts but we’re told we had to try it. We asked him what to order and he suggested their most popular glazed doughnut. since my wife and I don’t eat a lot of donuts we ordered one doughnut, and one cup of coffee. He came back to the window a few minutes later asked us about California then handed us a bag of four donuts and 2 cups of coffee. When I asked him how much we owed him he just smiled and said«not a thing» all I can say about how good the doughnuts were is that we actually ate all four donuts LOL cool people like that are hard to come by we really were blessed and it made us smile.

This location isn’t great. The donuts are over cooked on the outside and doughy on the inside. I had to return the donuts twice because it made me wanna throw up. I don’t know how anyone eats here. I love Shirley’s, just not this location. There are other locations in the area I will choose first. I’m surprised that no one else has commented on this issue, I’m not the only one who thinks the same thing.

This was my first visit to a Shipley DO-Nut Shop, and I certainly enjoyed my experience. Thought I have had kolaches before, their jalapeño & cheese kolache was excellent. I also tried their apple fritter which was absolutely amazing. Good donuts, delicious kolaches, quick service. Note: Credit Cards Accepted for order of $ 5+

4 stars for the shop and the service, 3 for the product. Funny thing is that a friend of mine and I have had a running fude over the ‘best’ donuts. I grew up on Shipley’s in Houston when there were a whopping 2 stores. So that is what I remembered most, Sunday morning and the Shipley’s. I moved away back in early 2000. I have traveled fare and wide and am currently in Rhode Island. Here, they have a couple places called Allie’s and West’s Bakery that do the fresh hot melt in your mouth donut as well. I have been very, very hard pressed to say they were better than Shiply’s. Now my friend is a true believer in Round Rock Donuts. While they are good, and probably up there in a tie for second, it us unfortunate that Shiply’s has managed to just be better than Dunken, Hortons and the local grocery store. They lost their mojo. I don’t know if it was because of cost cutting, hiring people with no history or love for the product, let alone ability to read the recipe card or just over expansion. So if you are sitting looking at Donut Palace or Shiply’s, I am afraid I will go with the former. What has happend to Houston and their home grown traditions? Did the city outsource?

I haven’t physically been to this location of Shipleys, but have benefited from the combination of the convenient drive through plus a pregnant coworker who lives in Spring. Nobody wants to pig out on donuts by themselves, at work anyway, so I get invited to share in the puffy glazed deliciousness. Yea!

Kolaches are amazing. If you are nearby, pick some up.

I’ve never heard of a Kolache until I came to visit my hubby’s family in Houston last year. Kolache’s is a breakfast snack that you get from Shipley’s. I dont know what else they make there but supposedly that’s what they’re known for. So saturday before our trip up to Dallas, we stopped by here to pick up some to snack on our 3 hour ride up. Since I wasnt a Unilocaler the first time I tried this amazing new food, i decided what better time to write about it. As we pulled up to the place, we were parked behind this truck for a good min. I didnt understand why, at first i thought we were just looking for parking and saw tons of parking near us. Then i realized, OMG, there’s a drive thru! i love drive thrus… saves us time from getting in and out of the car dealing with too many ppl… and yes im lazy! AND i was already comfortable sitting in the back seat with Emma… We ordered 5 sausage and cheese kolaches, and one with jalapenos. They’re sort of like pigs in a blanket, but they’re bigger and completely covered filled with cheese. The bread is very soft and tastes just like a donut. When I bit into it, i got a good chunk of the bread, sausage with gooey cheese and jalapenos(so freakin good!). Emma had her own kolache but minus the jalapenos. She obviously liked it alot because she ate a whole one by herself! This is a very good snack to eat for breakfast that isnt overly filling. I totally wish we had something like this in Cali =( *NOTE* someone should think about starting a business like this other than in Texas… spread the love!
