This place always seems deserted, and I can see why. This is one of my elderly mother’s favorite places, so I wind up in here semi-frequently. Most recently I got the camarones a la Alfonso’s. They were charred to a crisp and so over cooked that none of the jalapeño flavor came through at all. It was accompanied by tasteless refried beans from a can, ditto the rice. There’s absolutely no atmosphere in this place either. I might as well be in Any Cafeteria, USA.

This restaurant recently reopened after a short closure. Their menu has been completely redone — for the better! It’s much easier to understand and much clearer. The staff is very friendly and the restaurant is exceptionally clean. They are located in a small strip center at the end of Sawdust Road, between The Woodlands and Timber Ridge — Timber Lakes. The Mar & Terra Fajitas are excellent. They really know how to cook shrimp! Excellent flavor and perfectly done. The beef is tender and delicious. The chicken is very good also although there is not a whole lot you can do with grilled chicken, right? The chimichanga was disappointing — the meat was good and it was prepared well, but the filling was about half meat and half rice — too much rice. The side dishes are very bland although, I’ve been told by some Latino friends that that is pretty traditional. I’d prefer the refried beans to have a bit more flavor and the rice to have something other than ‘tomato soup’ flavor. Now, the charro beans are outstanding here. The best we’ve had. When Alfonso’s II first opened, we tried them twice — the food was just barely OK, the staff was always very friendly and pleasant and the environment squeaky clean. Since the reopening, the food(fajitas) is now the stand out!
