I have heard for years about the greatness that is Max Patch. All of my outdoorsy friends have raved about it and said it was a must see. After this weekend, I will become one of those people who sing it’s praises. The drive from Knoxville is an easy one. From start to finish, it isn’t much more than an hour and even that seemed to fly by driving through such scenery. Almost immediately off of the highway exit ramp, you enter the national forest and the road turns to gravel and you are in the woods. Following a windy climb through the trees for 7.5 miles, you will suddenly find yourself at the summit. Park in the parking lot just at the bottom or park along the road if it’s full. The climb to the top is short, steep, and well manicured. The top is breathtaking. Nothing short. You will be treated to 360 degree panoramic views of mountain ranges in each direction, including the good ol’smokies. So pack up a picnic, grab the pooch, and prepare to be wowed by mother nature. She really outdid herself this time. Just a note: There are no bathrooms and no garbage cans. Whatever you pack in, be kind enough to pack out.(This includes your puppy land minds)

This bald in Pisgah National Forest offers absolutely amazing panoramic views of Mount Mitchell and the Great Smoky Mountains. The Appalachian Trail crosses here and there are well-manicured trails which help guide through the tall grasses. Max Patch is one of my favorite places in the US bar none. Word of its beauty has spread, so if the parking lot is full, park along the dirt road leading up to the parking lot.
