I don’t think you could get any smaller or more locally based than this place. A standing-room-only bar in the basement of a bed and breakfast. I think they brew ½ barrel at a time. And the beers are really good! Friendly proprietors, a steady stream of loyal locals. Definitely check it out. Looking forward to a return visit when the weather allows outdoor seating.

Ale Works has great variety of tasty beer — we had a 6-beer sampler. I loved the rye and amber. The brewmeister is chill and laid back — fun to talk to. We stopped off there on the way to Luray. The beer garden is beautiful — I wish I lived closer.

The beer was delicious. The tasting room is a bit small, but the owners are working with the space they have available. This is a great spot to maybe go refill a growler. I tried the IPA and Saison and both were excellent. I’m not sure that I am competent to comment on the prices as I only had two drinks and the first one was a free complimentary drink, so, I don’t quite remember what the cost of the second one was, because I just gave a ten dollar bill to the server and told them to keep the change for a tip. If I’m every passing through the Town of Sperryville again, I’d stop by for a beer. Bonus note. There is an outdoor stand just west of Ale Works(Hopkins Ordinary) that sells apple butter and pumpkin butter, and other gifts. I have tried both butters, and they’re amazing!

Very tasty, thoughtful brews. Unfortunately, the bottled beer(not a growler) we purchased is flat. Two more bottles to go. Hopefully this is the odd one out.

Husband and I really stumbled upon this place while in Sperryville. We pulled into the parking lot to check the directions to another brewery in the area and Unilocal helpfully told us that we were sitting on top of this one. Technically they were closed, but the owner was loading some things into the brewery out of his van and happily invited us in. As others have mentioned, it is very small inside, so it was good that there were just the two of us. The owner was very friendly and we really enjoyed chatting with him while we tasted our beers, all of which we enjoyed. He is very knowledgeable about the area and was able to make both hiking and dining recommendations. We didn’t have a growler with us, alas, so bought a nice one from the owner as well as a few bottles. Unfortunately, the owner implied they’ll only be there a few more years, so get out and try them while you can.

Hopkins is a tiny, tiny craft beer joint tucked away in the basement of the owner’s B&B. The owners were really friendly, and I enjoyed most of their offerings. They started making beer for their B&B guests, but luckily for the rest of us they went public. This place definitely lives up to the term ‘micro brewery’! I had 4 ounce tastings of 6 beers. While one or two weren’t my style, the rest ranged from pretty good to excellent. I really liked the Altbeir(German for«Old Beer»), followed by the Brown Ale. The Saison was a tad fruiter than I like, but was still very drinkable. As I generally don’t like bitter finishes, the Stony Man didn’t do anything for me. The only one I didn’t necessarily care for(but still drank) was the Blonde. My notes fail me, since I don’t have anything on the IPA. While you are welcome to drink a pint on the premises, this isn’t a pub; it’s literally a small basement with a bar and brewery equipment. The only bathroom is upstairs, so you have leave and come in the back entrance. Bring growlers! They sell by the bottle but seem to sell out fast. WiFi is available.

Friendly staff willing to get you on the wi-fi if needed. We saw one customer sitting on the porch swing to enjoy their beer as we pulled into the small attached parking lot, but we descended through the«Ale Works» arch to sample at the basement counter. Innkeeper’s IPA was very mild on hops, and the Hazel River brown ale could have passed for a light stout. Altbier was reminiscent of a tame bock, and the Little Devil blonde ale was refreshing but had an odd finish. Saison de Printemps was probably my favorite of the day’s tasting. Purchases were Squared in a timely fashion. Given that pricing across the board was fair, we were happy to buy a stainless steel growler, but later disappointed that it had been poured short of the fill mark. Drink within a day if you don’t want it flat. Bottle of honey rye satisfied more than the hoppy amber, but the imperial porter’s my favorite.

Hopkins Ordinary Ale Works is a small nano craft brewery in Sperryville, VA. It’s located in the basement of Hopkins Ordinary Bed & Breakfast. It has it’s own separate entrance from the B&B. It’s pretty small — there is no place to sit. Instead you stand at a small counter — and either do a sampler of brews, or order a pint of your favorite. I met the two brewers during my visit — both were super nice guys! I ordered the ale sampler — five different brews: — Little Devil Blonde(Belgian Blonde Ale)(4.7% ABV) — Saison de Printemps(Farmhouse Ale)(6.0% ABV) — Appalachian Altbier(Düsseldorf-style)(5.1% ABV) — Hazel River Brown Ale(5.2% ABV) — Innkeeper’s IPA(6.6% ABV) All of the brews were reasonably tasty. Of the five I tasted I enjoyed the Hazel River Brown Ale and the Innkeeper’s IPA the most. The IPA is fairly mild as IPAs go. It’s not an in-your-face hop-overload type of IPA. The Hazel River Brown Ale has a deep, rich flavor to it — notes of coffee and chocolate! They periodically rotate in other brews throughout the year and seasonally. I don’t think there is any food here. There was no cell service on AT&T at the brewery. I got on the B&B WiFi network to check in and post photos. $ 10.00 to taste five ales. Good deal, nice little place!
