This place is amazing. The owners name is Mark and he is very friendly. My friends and I sampled every wine they had and a few local cheeses for free. It’s a tips only set up. Needless to say I lived most of their wines and purchased 3 bottles and a slice of homemade Gouda. This is a must see if your in the area. I will be back before I leave to bring some wine back to Tucson.

This is a fairly new operation, and it is obvious that they are still on a learning curve. Northfield has a rather small selection of wines, and more than half are of the sweet wines. For those who like their wines to be as sugary as their sweetest tea, you will probably love this place. Since they are rather new, they are still getting their bearings in terms of drier wines. In particular, their best Seyval Blanc that they had to sample was actually from Red Barn Winery further northwest on the Upper Cumberland Wine Trail. Northfield, however, will have their own Seyval some time in the future. I was not a fan of the Concord Grape or Northfield Reds, due to the high sugar and young age. However, I did buy a bottle of the Ol’ Black Izzy which is a light blackberry blend that is Northfield’s 2nd best seller. Their sweet wines are conducive to making into a slush or sorbet, and Northfield sells packets to do so. This store also seems to have a plethora of cheeses, jams, jellies, and other homemade goods. The grounds are absolutely beautiful, with a couple of really friendly, fluffy dogs. Northfield also hosts a lot of local events, from a high school reunion on the weekend I arrived, to wine glass painting socials, and other events. My honest opinion: the even newer Cellar 53 Winery a few exits west has a more dedicated focus to wines than Northfield which shows in Cellar’s more sophisticated offerings. Northfield’s palate is still maturing, and it will eventually reach a level of sophistication that will make it a more serious operation, with continued help and advice from Red Barn Winery. In the meantime, however, Northfield’s focus seems diverted between their wines and the rest of their food operations.
