Old school ambiance new school prices. However breakfasts here are first rate and will really fill you up to the point where you might skip lunch. Homemade sausage patties and the griddled mashed potatoes are both tasty and charming.

A neighborhood spot that only locals would appreciate. The breakfast menu is limited to eggs; homemade sausage is the house specialty. Friendly service makes an otherwise average place acceptable.

I have lived in Fairfield for a long time and I am now kicking myself for waiting this long to try this place. I stopped in this morning for breakfast with my daughter and we both were very happy. I got the sweet sausage egg and cheese sandwich which was excellent. It was large and messy but great flavor. My daughter got ham egg and potatoes and she really liked it wich is saying a lot for a 14 year old. I tried and liked the grilled mashed potato pancake off my daughter’s plate. The service was quick and friendly. Looks like a new regular spot.

Best breakfast place around. Hot sausage egg and cheese with a side of griddled mash potatoes is on a whole other level. It is a small place, and usually packed with regulars. Support this old school dive and they will reward you with friendly service and great food. Been coming here for over 20 years and they’ve kept up their quality without a doubt.

A classic greasy spoon in the absolute best way possible. Great breakfasts. Homemade sausage is their specialty, and I like the griddle-browned mashed potatoes that come with the egg dishes.

Over rated. I came in on a Sunday morning and the place was starting to fill up, but the server took over 10 minutes to get to me. He never brought me my coffee and I had to ask for it after a party came in after me and got their coffee quickly. The food was ok but over priced for a diner. I had an omelette with hot sausage, peppers, spinach and cheddar. It was good but nothing special. Based on the service alone I won’t be back.

Really great sandwiches even their dinner or lunch meals. I have been going to the dugout for at least 40 years plus.

First time here and ended up ordering a smörgåsbord because I was starving. Everything from the omelette, French toast and hash browns was nothing short of amazing. I had the pleasure of being served by the owner one early Friday morning. He was a sweet, down to earth guy that you can talk to about your ridiculous commute to work. Gone back and for the second time it was amazing. Even at a busy point, they still kept the personal touch. Definitely an early morning staple spot.

Great food. Fast service. Formica counters with some ripped booth seats. Look past that. Worth stopping for breakfast.

Almost the same order as last time; sweet sausage, home fries and a hard roll for my toast. My friend ordered bacon, home fries and rye. And of course we shared the French toast again! This time I noticed that the coffee is great! I think I had three cups. The food was once again amazing! Thanks S&S Dugout! Cheers to my favorite breakfast in CT!

You can catch me here at least once a week! The mashed potatos are a must no matter what you get! It’s a great old fashioned place serving up some killer hangover food!

Truly a diamond in the rough. Old school to the max!!! This is one place that hasn’t and shouldn’t ever change!!! Get the sausage and pepper sandwhich… I’ve been there half a dozen times and it is always amazing. I don’t get sausage and peppers anywhere else, ever but this place is something special. Go anytime u can, it is worth it!!!

Came for breakfast based on Unilocal reviews. Other reviews are all true. Slightly pricey for a no frills venue. BUT. The food and vibe has a not rushed feel of relaxed. The staff are very nice and keep coming around to refill your coffee. I enjoyed the food and did not find it too greasy, just right. Wish they were a little less $, but I suspect they aren’t using powdered eggs etc. I’d go back.

Not sure of the hype. Hot roast beef sandwich with gravy was decent,(actually the gravy was pretty good) but the roast beef was overcooked. The fried mashed potatoes were swimming with butter. Some people might like it, but definitely not for me. I almost ordered a breakfast sandwich until I saw that a sausage egg and cheese was almost $ 7. Maybe because they make their own sausage patties? Sorry, for a small hole in the wall time warp place, the prices don’t justify the quality. Might give it one more chance on a whim, but not sure.

A friend recommended this place so we decided to give it a try. The look of this place is not impressive. It hasn’t been updates in 40 years, but that’s what I loved about it. It was a throw back in the middle of this commercial strip. The small portion roast beef sandwich was excellent and only $ 7. The cheese fries weren’t so good. They chose mozzarella as the cheese, which didn’t say wow. The veggie egg white omelette was tasty. The rootbeer float was large, frothy and delicious. Service was wonderful and the entire staff was friendly. We will be back.

My coworkers and I stumbled upon this diner en route to a business meeting in MA from New York City. We grew hungry so I searched for local diners using the Unilocal app while on the road. This place had pretty good reviews so we took a chance and we are glad we did. When our GPS told us we had arrived we thought it had been some sort of mistake — no big sign announcing our arrival and a sort of awkward parking lot situation. We peeked inside the windows and saw the tell-tale signs of a diner and noticed the letters«S&S» on the doorway so we knew we were in the right place. As we entered we noticed we were the only ones inside(being Monday afternoon it wasn’t too big of a surprise) but it was a bit disorienting to be honest. We were soon greeted by a man behind the grill who was thrilled we stopped by. Not knowing what was good, he suggested the roast beef sandwiches. My two co-workers indulged in his suggestion, while I opted for a grilled cheese(vegetation option for the win!). He apologized for being so short staffed(him being the only worker on duty since he had his staff work hard during the holiday season). The best way to describe what followed, was like having your own personal chef and your own personal diner. While we waited we read the various newspaper clippings posted on the walls and were able to appreciate the diners history and importance in the local community. Once the food arrived we understood why this place has such a history! My coworkers are STILL talking about how delicious the roast beef sandwiches were, and I can tell you the grilled cheese was perfect. Thank you Unilocal & thank you S&S Dugout for a great and satisfying experience!
