Ok… I live in Arizona now… and I grew up eating star deli since my days of being a car Porter at Tamaroff… and going to Southfield High School. My wife recently brought me back a corned beef special… some beef salami… some bread heels… old Dill pickles… crab salad… and a smoked turkey special. Not only did it bring back nostalgia… I was a glutton in pure deli bliss… just like I remembered from almost 20 years ago. There is no better Jewish deli in Michigan and they represent Southfield to perfection. The consistency is still the same. I wonder if the old guy still slices fresh bread with his razor sharp knife at the front counter… all this talk about rudeness… it wouldn’t be a Jewish deli if they weren’t a little slow or rude… u can’t rush perfection and fresh scratch cooking. They also employ people of all races and the guys up front treated my wife like Royalty… Keep up the good work… Love u guys… see u next time… Peace and love.

This is one of my favorite delis to go to. Get the honeycup mustard on your sandwich! Mmmmm yumm! The sandwiches are expensive, but worth every bite and penny.

It’s no House of Reuben, but solid sandwich. Ladies at the register took my money but that’s it. Not great service. Don’t let that turn you off though, they don’t pretend to be a restaurant. This is a small store that happens to sell boss sandwiches too.

Great sandwiches definitely recommended. Tried their grilled chicken sandwich which was good. The service was quick and pleasant. Only reason I had to give 4 stars is because I’ve had better in NY and only need to be fair to my favorites ;)

Very good. I had the vegetarian sandwich and it was very tasty. Delicious rye bread piled HIGH with tomato, coleslaw, lettuce, onion, Swiss cheese, and very yummy Russian dressing! Wow! Lots of flavor for a veggie sandwich. Prices are high, but you’re getting what you pay for… quality food at a place that is locally owned. I would recommend this place so anyone looking for an extremely filling and delicious sandwich. This is a grab and go place, no where to eat there.

I’ve always enjoyed the sandwiches and could tolerate the people at star deli until the last couple of instances. I recommended a place to eat to a friend and he called at 8:40 to order two sandwiches. The man on the phone asked if he knew what time it was. They close at 9pm so to be polite we called before pick up to ensure they would have time to make them. So a few days later my friend says she just wants a snack and we were at the bagel place next door. She said that deli has snacks so I went with her. She looks around and says I don’t want anything… I saw they had a breakfast sandwich and the man says can I help you? I said no thanks and she says not today thanks. As we are walking out he yells STICKERSHOCK! Ummmm, no it wasn’t a sticker shock I’ve gotten sandwiches from there for years and also recommending people there for years. I can afford a deli sandwich from there whenever I want but I won’t anymore. I grew up and continue to live in Southfield. However, I will take my business elsewhere nor will I recommend Star deli. I’ve even sent out an email at my workplace that is less than a half mile from there to not spend money at that business. For now I’ll take my deli happy behind to a better happier deli where they appreciate my business.

RUDE. Good food, but the staff is awful. Won’t go in again. I’ll stick to the bagel shop next door.

Possibly the worst deli experience I have ever had. I should have just kept driving after the woman who I placed my order with over the phone was curt and rude. Upon coming in, the cashier(who I spoke with on the phone) was called to the front and after a few minutes, finally arrived. She hastily checked me out without so much as a smile or thank you. All this I could have forgiven if the food wasn’t so horrible. My mushroom barley soup(the best thing) was completely flavorless. The chicken salad was so disgusting I threw it out after a couple bites(basically a pool of mayo with rubbery chicken chunks and no seasoning). The turkey on the sandwich seemed highly processed and rubbery as well and the coleslaw was watery and gross. Needless to say, I will not be returning and am rather upset that I wasted my money.

Man I just read Andy P’s review and he nailed it right on the head! Good food, but the ladies at the cash registers are extremely mean & horrible! It’s unfortunate that people who don’t enjoy their work take it out on guests. I WILLNEVERGOBACK!!!

Ordered ½ sandwich and bowl of soup and it came to $ 13.11. Turns out the ½ sandwich is only $ 2.00 less than a full sandwich. But they don’t tell you that when you order. You get to the register and surprise. Won’t be going back here again.

I have to partially agree with Andy’s 9⁄22 review. I went there yesterday around 12:00. After waiting a while to get served,(I was the only person who was planning to place an order), I was finally asked what I wanted by a very rude man want I wanted. I asked for between 1⁄3 and ½ pound of both VERY, VERYFATTY Pastrami AND Pastrami. I repeated this several times. He called the order back and when I opened both packages, NEITHER one of them had any fat. While this might be good for many people, it is not good for me. I don’t know if Star charges more for lean meats, but at $ 17.99 a pound for Corned Beef and $ 18.99 a pound for Pastrami, a customer should get what they order. With these 2 meats and a Bowl of Mushroom Barley costing me $ 19.90, I am not at all pleased. As I had numerous errands to run, I was unable to call about this problem or return to the restaurant the same day. I ended up giving away the 2 meats. I am currently not working so I feel like I threw away about $ 15.50. I called this morning and spoke to a young lady and she transferred me to the owner. His response to this problem, «Why didn’t you come back or call about this yesterday?» I responded by saying I had all sorts of errands to run and was not in the area. His response, «I AMNOTGOINGTOREPLACEIT, BUTNEXTTIMEYOUCOMEIN, I’LLGIVEYOU A DISCOUNT. I was in the process of asking when I could come back in as I had such a taste for this and I WASHUNGUPON!!! Apparently the employees are not the only ones that are unhappy being there. SOISTHEOWNER. APPARENTLYIT’S TIMEFORHIMTORETIRE!!! As a customer, I have lot’s of choices where I can go for deli. This place may be close to my house, but in the future I will go to Plaza Deli which is only 1 mile west from Star Deli. I can go to Bread Basket Deli,(many locations although not as good), Stage Deli in West Bloomfield, Pickles & Rye across the street from Stage Deli or numerous or places. One thing for sure I won’t go back to Star Deli. It’s time for a complete new staff and owner. Customers need to realize that as a customer they should get what they want and get good service at the same time.

Wow! I am impressed by the quality of offerings here. As a former Montrealer, I consider myself to be an aficionado on corn beef, pastrami and smoked meat sandwiches. Big thanks to the Unilocalers that came before me, this is why we drove here today! My party of two ordered the corn beef lean, on rye with Russian dressing, coleslaw and mustard. Tasty succulent meat, wonderful soft rye with a crust that holds together well. This is served with a small wedge of pickle on the side. We also had fries on the side, they were hot and crispy made to order. This establishment is simply a deli counter making sandwiches for take out. Seating is two small tables outside the front door. There was a steady flow of clients while we noshed on our lunches. Not being able to finish off the large size potion, I quickly realized that if I took these leftovers home, my husband would be begging for his share. So I ordered a second sandwich to go. We will return! It’s worth the hour drive! Yum!

This was about the worst corned beef Ive ever had!!! I ordered the reuben and a canned pop, totaling over $ 13! The corned beef had no taste to it at all. It was tasteless and bland.

I love the food at Star Deli. In fact i often go out of my way to stop in there. In fact, today I drove past 2 perfectly good deli’s to get to Star. I’ve been a regular customer for over 30 years. Today was my last visit. Why? I’m OK with the guys behind the counter being sort of gruff… at least they get their job done in an efficient manner. It’s the ladies at the cash register that will prevent me from going to Star ever again. I cannot accept the ill tempered, slow and inefficient way that these witches check people out at the cash register. Being surly and mean to customers is a sure fire way to lose business… and today I walked out with out my order because the unhappy red-haired lady at the register felt it necessary to belittle me because I asked for an additional item. My sandwich was ready in 2 minutes, but it took me 10 minutes to get to register. When I requested for a small container of egg salad. the red haired witch took it upon herself to roll her eyes and act like I committed a crime because I didn’t ask for the egg salad up front. I asked her if she was happy working at star… because it sure doesn’t seem like it. This is not the first time I have received extremely poor customer service at the register… but this is the first time I made a stink and walked out without my order. I told the lady that I would never be back… after 30 years. She said«I don’t care». Really? It was obvious, that she didn’t care The owner was right there… he didn’t apologize, he didn’t ask what happened… he just let me walk… money in hand ready to pay. One silver lining. I never have to go into that crummy parking lot again. It’s an accident waiting to happen. I’m sad… that I won’t get to enjoy Star’s corned beef ever again. But I wont miss the bogus attitude one iota.

Our go to place for carry out deli. Fast and friendly. Reasonable prices(for deli). No tables. Normal selection of meats, cheeses, etc.

My favorite sandwich is the egg salad on a New Yorker onion roll(you MUST specify NEWYORKER onion roll or else they will give you the regular stale onion roll that sits there all week), with lettuce, tomato, and baby swiss cheese all for around $ 8.50 with a free pickle. The prices are borderline insane considering it cost close to $ 12 for one sandwich. The egg salad is one of their«cheaper» sandwiches. I want to try their«vegetarian chicken liver» sandwich next. My Jewish doctor at Providence Hospital was having Star Deli cater lunch for his staff. This is how I found out about Star Deli. I’m 42 and lived in the area my entire life. I wish I knew about this deli years earlier. The only negative is the parking really sucks, and there no place to eat inside as it’s «carry-out» only. The owner is interesting to speak with. He reminds me of George Costanza’s dad on Seinfeld.

This family-owned shop is nestled in a strip mall in Southfield. Get ready for sandwiches stacked as high as your mouth can handle. I ordered the veggie sandwich and couldn’t get the entire sandwich in my mouth — on top of that, it tastes awesome with Russian dressing and cole slaw to give it a wonderfully crunchy profile. I’m convinced that whatever pastries they serve in this place are worth your time, money, and spike in blood sugar level. If you like sweets you’ll enjoy the cheesecake, cinnamon walnut pastry, cookies, etc. the owner is typically walking around and trying to get you to get that extra side, soda, sweets, or anything else he can, and he does it with an infectious smile. You’ll enjoy all that this place has to offer.

My first experience at the Star Deli was over 15 years ago and it had been at least 5 yrs since my last visit. The price is on the high end for a sandwich. I had the hot roast beef brisket which was mostly tender but«not very flavorful». I should have gone with their signature corned beef, at least I might have felt that it was worth what I paid had it been good. I’ll never know because I will never return. The biggest disappointment was the bad service. Let me say, the gentleman that made my sandwich was attentive and polite but the two ladies behind the counter handling check out apparently felt that gossiping with each other was more important than acknowledging that a paying customer was on the other side of the counter. Mind you.. .waiting to hand them money. But the«Gossiping» was king in their world. I was hoping to at least be blown away by the sandwich since their customer treatment is secondary. But unfortunately it was only ok. To sum it up, it is not worth the money and I refuse to pay for poor treatment.

Very fresh and good sammy’s, just make sure to ask for a pickle if you are really looking forward to getting one. I figured one would just be there, and to my dismay it wasn’t :-(
