Where else do you go for Chebureki? I was out on Greenfield pouring the concrete for this bumpy road and before I was leaving, I saw the sign for«Gold International Bakery» calling me… so, I had to walk over. Once inside, it is Russian pastry heaven. I have only had anything close to Chebureki in Windsor and I never expected to find the Russian meat pies here. The young Russian woman inside was so nice to me… will definitely come back. It appears it is her and her mother making everything from scratch. Something different… something good. Hidden back on the northwest corner of Greenfield and 10 Mile Rd.

I decided to go to Gold International Bakery after a friend’s coworkers took her there and she said it was good. Gold International is a russian bakery found in a little row of stores, right off the Evergreen exit of I-696, that is the closest to little russia I’ve seen around Detroit thus far. There’s also a café and a russian grocery store in the same complex. Interestingly the entrances to most of the stores are out of view from 10 mile road and there’s actually a small enclosed walkway between the stores that would be great if half of the storefronts weren’t empty… I guess I look a bit russian since as soon as I entered the tiny storefront I was bombareded with russian greetings. Luckily, at least one of the owners speak English. I came in for the bread rolls(filled with your choice of potato, meat, or cabbage) since my friend said they were good. I ordered one of each, which are about the size of a small sub roll. The owner offered to heat them up for me and I took her advice. Besides the rolls, there was a few other interesting looking bread items, but nothing was labeled so I decided to stick with the rolls. The selection was rather sparse but I perhaps that was due to the late sunday afternoon in which I stopped by the store. Anyway, back to the rolls. I took them home and quickly tried them. The filling in each roll was tasty and the bread was ok. They reminded me of the filled buns you can pick up at a chinese bakery. The only bad thing is that they were overly greasy. After eating them my stomach was hurting from the grease overdose. All in all, Gold International Bakery offers a niche product which I have not seen elsewhere and that’s reason enough for me to give them a second chance.
