Have been here three times for lunch in the past two weeks since my favorite pub lunch, Publick House, is relocating to former Driver’s Seat. The food at Shippy’s is very well prepared and except for one — too salty for my palate — soup, has been absolutely delicious and extremely satisfying. The salads, potato pancakes, Pastrami sandwich, Kielbasa, and creamed spinach were all wonderful. One lunch special, the blackened chicken sandwich was perfectly succulent. The perfectly served fresh German tap beer makes a welcome complement to the happy lunch experience. The atmosphere and staff are most friendly. This is the place to drop by, relax, and savor the comfort and yummy meals. The menu is quite varied with many items to please every palate. The prices are worth it! Will definitely return. There is also a pet friendly outdoor dining table which I took advantage on one of our beautiful early Hampton spring days!

Strolled in for a no-frills lunch. Open since the 50’s so the décor is interesting to look at– especially the old German steins, etc., behind the bar. Enjoyed a delicious hot pastrami on rye sandwich and blackened chicken salad and German beer on tap. Very laid back atmosphere and a local’s favorite. I’m from here and admit it’s been years since I’ve visited– I’ll have to come back again soon. Lunch special prices are worth it.

I went there in a winter storm, nobody on the streets, nobody inside, it was like a quarter to 3 pm, I was 9 months pregnant, moving like an old turtle. without any pleasantries, I was given 5 minutes to order by the rudest man a restaurant can hire. Needless to say I put the menu down and left. I know kitchens closes for lunch, I know how restaurants work but the way this man handled the situation it was awful, plus I was about to give birth and starving. I rather eat from a can than give this place another shot.

Where is the old Shippy’s I don’t know, but I know that I will never go back there! Food is far far away from the old days, unless nobody like to cook on Sunday any more. I went there right after the afternoon movie, raving for the special of the day, «prime beef» The clam chowder(Manhattan) was nothing but a vegetable soup with some spare chopped clams, the clams Casino were composed of chunks of burned bacon on top of half clams, soggy with butter, no bread crumbs and no strips of roasted pepper(original recipe) Finally came the beef, I order un end cut in memory of the last fantastic piece of prime beef i had years ago, well, nothing like that! It was tuff, dry, tasteless, probably the chef doesn’t know how the prime beef need a slow oven cooking(possibly cover with thin foil) The mash potato also need more love as well as the red cabbage Result: a poor Sunday afternoon meal after a great expectation! My only consolation was un Irish coffee !

This place is a seriously a joke. DONTEVENCOMEHERE. If you want to see how poorly a restaurant does, then this place is where to go. This place doesn’t even deserve one star. It’s all Shitty old people that are depressed that there not making money like everyone else in the Hamptons. All very rude. The 100 year old skinny waitress that looks like she is about to drop dead had the worse attitude. She almost dropped my drink because of how old she is. Then the fat blonde manager who probably couldn’t fit anything else in her y was completely rude. I asked for a burger, which they usually make and the waitress said no. Then, the fat manager said go to like a McDonald’s to get a burger. Bitch no, you look like you just ate all the burgers in the kitchen and don’t want to share.. Waitress didn’t care at all. The food is not even acceptable. This place needs to get non-menopausal women and maybe they can do a little better if there are lucky. She threw the menus at us. Im sure they just meant ISSHITTY! Business is not even busy. Always open tables everywhere. To the owner, get rid of your staff and maybe that’s why you do are so horrible.

THEBEST German food ever. Platters are big, waiters and waitresses are very nice and quick. The décor is a bit dated though

Food is either just ok or bad. Extremely over priced. I paid 25 bucks for a piece of chicken schnitzel was maybe 6 bites. It would’ve been small for an appetizer. Thought it was a fluke, but another person ordered the same and hers was even smaller. My mother ordered the chicken with crispy skin and it came out practically inedible it was so dry. Tasted like eating a saltine. The creamed spinach was pretty good as were the mashed potatoes. Even if all the dishes were the proper size, it would still be too expensive for what it is. Definitely skip it

This place is OK. Perhaps I’ll come again, as I was there for lunch and had a small sandwich; and the person I was with said it’s «packed on Friday night.» I’d like to try something else on the menu to get a better idea of the quality of food. It’s very dark inside, gloomy, dated atmosphere. This will probably never change.

Not good. Just call it a bar locals can hang out in and be done. Don’t call it a German restaurant though. It really doesn’t meet that standard. And what was with the woman styling the guy’s hair at the bar today like it was a hair salon? People are eating for crying out loud. Knock it off.

Stopped in last night for dinner. We were rushed to our seats before we had a chance to look at the menu. Once seated and drinks were ordered we realized there was nothing appetizing for dinner and the prices were outrageous even for Southampton. We opted to finish our drinks and just order apps. When I placed my order the waitress rudely said, «That’s all you getting?». I said yes and a member of my party then ordered and said«We’re only getting small bites». Again the waitress with an obviously annoyed attitude said«We don’t do that here.» I said, «Well we can just pay for our drinks and be on our way then.» To which she responded«Its fine I’ll place the order,» and stormed off. Two of our appetizers arrived and then about 7 minutes later the third one arrived. The French onion soup was salty, the shrimp scampi was nice, and the onion rings were not onion rings but instead shoestring onion straws with no taste or flavor. We had to ask for our check twice and eventually paid then left. Don’t waste your time here. The food is overpriced, the service terrible and the décor straight outta the sixties.

The food is great! Very nice specials and authentic German food. The service is a little slow but very friendly. The food is always ready very quickly and the plates are big. Definitely worth the money. When dining there I always feel very relaxed. Most of the tables are for two people only which makes it somewhat small and private which I like a lot. I recommend going there but be sure to make a reservation during the summertime and to not be in a rush.

Don’t bother unless you want rude service and a nasty attitude. After giving them a second chance in case they just had an «off» day, I will never spend another dime at Shippy’s.(Edited to give full details) At Christmastime my husband went to buy a gift certificate there for his parents. No one else in restaurant but him until another fellow walks in behind him and sits at the bar. When the bartender approached the other man, the gentleman referred to my husband and suggested the bartender help my husband first. Bartender’s reply: «oh, him? He can wait.» Needless to say the gift certificate was not purchased as my husband immediately left. We have had meals here occasionally over the 20+ years I have lived here. We don’t frequent it often because I have never liked the scolding form the hostess and the dour mood of the waitresses. We have shown up for an early dinner, asked if they have availability and then when we say we don’t have a reservation we have gotten sighs and scolding for needing one. Doing us a great favor, we were seated and served. I have always found it strange that not every table fills before the meal is over but I have been made to feel as if I am imposing upon their service. The straw that broke the camel’s back was calling in a take out order. We have resorted to doing this as I do like their fried shrimp but do not enjoy the actual service at the restaurant. Calling in take out usually results in the same sigh and feeling of inconveniencing the person answering the phone and heaven forbid you have to ask any questions. This past Friday I called to place a take out order. The person answering the phone gave me the sigh, told me to hold and then proceeded to tell someone at the restaurant about how annoying take out orders are. She then returned to speaking to me and said they would not take any more take out orders. When I said, «Oh? Okay…» She hung up. I cannot recommend this restaurant.

Sometimes its nice to go to a place where you’re not looked down on or everything must be up to the standards of a Keith Mcnally restaurant… I grew up in this place and since then and before then this place has not changed let the slob snobs rip it as a glorified dinner I will enjoy my sizzling NY Strip and a side of shredded onion rings.

It’s beyond me how this place is still open! The food was horrible. They don’t season anything. It was all bland and rubbery, some of our entrees were inedible. It’s dark and old inside and not one person was under 65. Will never go there again. Overpriced bland food!

I’ve been here twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. Each time I got a stomach ache afterwards. When I had dinner there, I was served creamed spinach with my meal that tasted so bad it was inedible. The mashed potatoes tasted like they were made with margarine. The Schnitzel was overcooked and greasy. I felt ripped off paying over 30 bucks for this food. And I don’t know what’s up with the décor — the inside looks like my grandmother’s living room, and not in a good way. The plastic table cloth was sticky, and it just seemed really run-down inside. I grew up in Germany and on German food, so maybe I’m a little picky, but I won’t be eating there again.

Shippy’s is an old standby-by off the beaten track — meaning not on Main St — and full of Southampton locals. Food is traditional German fare, which the chef does nicely … Not sure I would want to try any of the American dishes here given that the German food is good. Don’t let the run down décor of this place deter you from giving it a try … Decent sized German beer menu and sort of looks like an old NYC pub that hasn’t been updated in decades. Wines are reasonably priced, as are the beers. It’s open year round, and some hearty German food when it’s cold out is always yummy. Not sure I’d go too far out of my way just to try it, but it’s worth a shot and I’ll be back.

I don’t know if the slow service was because there was one waitress, and there were supposed to be more, or, if they, on purpose, only have one waitress. She had to serve everyone so needless to say, it was slow going. We arrived around 2:30 in the afternoon, didn’t get out of there till about 4. Thats way too long for lunch. We were served a basket with pre wrapped crackers in it(half were broken). The basket had accidentally turned over, and there was a dead earwig stuck to it. Lovely. I did tell the waitress about it, she apologized. In the end, due to that, SOMETHING should have been offered to us. I wasn’t expecting free lunch, but she could have offered something. Whatever. The food we ordered was at least good. I ordered Roast beef and swiss BLT with horseradish mayo. It was really good, but they need to use thicker pumpernickle bread, LOL! It was no match for the inside of the sandwich, LOL! All in all, the food was good, but, due to the service and the bug issue, i don’t think i’ll be returning anytime soon.

I don’t know how Shippy’s stays in business for so long in the Village of Southampton no less. The ladies who lunch aren’t going to Shippys. It’s heavy German food and inside is dark and old. No, The people that come here live here 12 months out of the year, the local folks that support the town year round. Let the tourist go to Main St. Shippy’s has it covered for the rest of us. Let’s talk Schnitzel! They make a Wiener Schnitzel here that is heavenly. Breaded Veal that’s cooked perfectly.(My wifes favorite) I usually dive into the Bratwurst with Saurerkraut. Yum! Just throwing it out there: Bratwurst is Port sausage Knockwurst is beef sausage and Weisswurst is Veal sausage I commonly refer to these wursts as the Niña, Pinta and Santa María. I never sat down here for lunch but I did order a cheese burger platter to go, lots french fries. This is the place if you like German food for lunch, They serve Liverwurst on rye as well as a kickin’ pastrami and swiss on rye. Great beers as well, its a staple for me in Southampton!

This is one of the older places in the Village of Southampton and has a nice relaxed vibe. This is where you go if you want prime rib, rack of lamb with mint jelly, baked potato, baked clams. french onion soup, clam chowder, herring, crab legs. surf and turf. they will have something you’ll really like unless you are vegetarian. then you may suffer in here. Also find traditional german entrée’s like sauerbraten, bratwurst, bavarian mixed plate, along with full bar and tap beer. It’s a small to mid sized place with a waitress that reminds you of an aunt you don’t visit too often. But this place always comes out ahead of The Driver’s seat a larger local place also there forever it seems. :) I like this place alot.

Shippy’s is a German-style restaurant that serves up some decent beer and wiener schnitzel. It’s definitely not a place to bring kids. We did and felt out of place since there isn’t a kids menu and the clientele is average age 70. The waitresses look like they’ve been working here since the Hindenburg crashed but they were sweet(except for ours). The prices were a bit high — most entrees ranged from $ 25 and up – for what’s essentially a glorified diner. Conclusion: My bro and I liked this place but I doubt we’ll be able to get the SIL to go back. But I may head back for some schnitzel, we’ll see…
