I was in the mood to try a different food truck at Truck Stop on 1st& Mission, so I gave the comic-book themed truck a try. Hiyaa serves up their take on Asian fusion in somewhat of a Chipotle format menu, in that you… 1. Choose a protein: Bulkogi, Spicy Pork, Lemon Grass Chicken, Curry Chicken, or a Vegetarian option. 2. Choose the form: Sandwich, Salad, Rice Bowl, or with Fries All cost ~$ 8 – 10. I had the Bulkogi in a Roll. It was quite tasty, but there is room for a little improvement. The shredded pickled carrots and cucumber slices were nice and spicy, but were topped off a little haphazardly and didn’t sit too nicely in the sandwich. The romaine lettuce was unecessary. Also, the baguette was rather chewy. The marinated bulgogi beef tasted okay, but it was a little tough, or maybe it just seemed that way because of the texture of the bread. On the plus side, it was a large sandwich, so it was pretty filling. Maybe I’ll try it again another time. I’m interested in the rice options. Hot marinated beef over steaming rice sounds good.

Ordered a bibimbap and it was okay. It was served with a side salad that didn’t have any flavor or dressing. Looked like it was just there to add some green to the palate. Also ordered the salt and pepper fried chicken bites… Honestly the worst bites I’ve ever eaten for like $ 7… Not only was it super dry but it lacked flavor. Where was the salt and pepper? I usually enjoy the food I order from food trucks but this was beyond disappointing. I couldn’t even finish it.

Used my credit Card here– the next day the number’s were lifted and used to purchase $ 500.00 at Safeway. The police think the food truck’s square card was the most likely source of the security breach; don’t know for sure. The food was good, but to steep of a price for me. I’ll probably never go back.

I’ll give this truck some points for the large portion I got but it was a lot of something I didn’t really enjoy. The only vegetarian option was the lemongrass mushroom, which you can get on a roll, rice, or salad. I got this on a roll because banh mi(Vietnamese sandwiches) is one of my favorite food items. The filling consisted of over a cup of sliced button mushrooms with no lemongrass flavor. There were also tons of chopped up lettuce and lightly pickled, julienned carrots. The mushrooms were very cooked and almost mushy from its natural juices and the mayo. The good thing, I suppose, was that it was cheap for food truck banh mi. Typically it costs $ 7 and up, even for a vegetarian one, and this one was $ 5. Maybe there’s a discount for employees since this one was parked at my workplace. The menu on the truck says $ 7.

I tried the bulgogi with rice and salad, and I really wanted the noodles with it, but they said they could not do that and I would have to buy it as a side. Overall it was tasty, but very pricey coming from a food truck. It’s one of those trucks where you only want to try it once to say that you tried it. I paid $ 18 total for the side of noodles($ 7) and($ 11) for the bulgogi, rice and salad combo.

At the J Pop Summit were a small sampling of food trucks and I chose this one not knowing much about them. Pleasantly surprised. Got the bulgogi on French fries and a Thai iced tea. My order came as a nice pile of bulgogi and shredded lettuce, cucumber and carrots atop crispy shoestring fries. There was a refreshing sweet sauce that complemented the bulgogi. The beef itself had good flavor but was mild rather than spicy. The fries remained crispy despite being buried under the meat. Delicious stuff! I’d definitely try this truck again.

my employer brings in lunch for us M-F, though on fridays they usually arrange for a food truck to come by during lunchtime for a couple hours during which we can walk outside and get lunch. Last friday it was Hiyaa. I ordered the bulgogi sandwich – because it was a special item listed first on their menu and because i liked it the few times i ordered it before at sit-down restaurants. this one was horrible though; i tossed it in the trash even though i was hungry. Most of the ‘meat’ was either pure fat or completely unchewable – pieces that are difficult to cut even with the sharpest knife and which – at any restaurant that is even slightly concerned about what they serve to their customers – are quickly trimmed at the butcher shop. To prepare and serve a sandwich like this, pretty clearly indicates a shop where the employees just doesn’t give a damn – bothers me that someone would make a sandwich and charge money for it that they would almost certainly refuse to eat themselves. Usually the term«inedible» is hyperbole, in this case it’s not.

I really only eat homemade Vietnamese food, but the chicken banh mi was too oily/fatty for my taste either way. Chicken was a little slimy and there was too much dressing. I wish it were a bit healthier(ex. whole grain bread).

A Chiptole-esqe take on Asian cuisine with your choice of protein(bulkogi, spicy pork, lemongrass chicken, tofu) over your choice of non-protein(sandwich, rice, salad, fries). Tons of flavor packed into each protein option which helps a little go a long way(…though their portions are not little, actually quite reasonable). Spicy Fried Chicken over Fries: If you’re gonna go unhealthy, then go all the way! Fried chicken on top of fried potatoes; I felt the diabetus creeping in as I ate this. But so tasty. The chicken chunks are super crunchy, like I left a few pieces at my desk and came back after 2 hours of meetings and they were still crispy. The sauce is like a fancy General Tso’s, which is spicier and tastier than Panda Express. The fries catch a nice coating of glaze that drips below eliminating the need for ketchup.

I love it when they come out to the warrior we GIVE community service days. The spicy pork over rice was delicious. I like that they provide some greens on the side. It balances our the meat, so I feel a bit more healthier. Big portions and spicy!!!

I was pretty surprised to see that this place only had a three star rating on here. I have been going to Hiyaaa! At the Belmont Off The Grid for months now and their food and service is always very good. I routinely order the bulgogi sandwich, which is always amazing. Most recently I paired it with an order of their salt and pepper fries which were pretty awesome as well. Their pork sandwich is also a very solid choice, although I tend to like the bulgogi a little bit more. The only qualm I have with the place is they put an ungodly amount of lettuce/slaw on top of the sandwich which makes consumption somewhat difficult. Aside from that, I don’t see much wrong with this food truck.

This place is okay for a protein+rice style food truck. I ordered lemongrass beef bowl. It was made quickly but there was no lemongrass taste with my beef. I liked the fact there were a lot of veggies served with my order to keep the textures and flavors interesting.

Got to try this place instead of the ramen at The Ramen Festival. It’s a cool concept. It’s basically a mix of Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese food. You pick the type of meat you want, and the meat is cooked in one of these styles like lemon grass chicken, or spicy pork. Then you choose how you want it, like in a banh mi, over white rice or in bimbibop style. I got a spicy pork banh mi, and it was delicious. It’s not any thing different from any other banh mi, but it tasted great. I want to give this place 3 stars, but my boyfriend and I both got tummy aches after eating the food here.

TERRIBLESERVICE!!! Can’t expect much from a food truck. They were posted at the TruckStop location in FiDi. It’s later in the afternoon, the lunch crowd is long gone. I ordered a SIMPLESIDE(spice tofu bites) and it really took me 10 minutes to get PLUS they were pumping out other people’s orders of full meals that ordered AFTERME. That really bothered me. 1) *see picture* Tofu Bites. Wasn’t worth the $ 5.50, really worth $ 2. Taste, the tofu is mushy and the hot sauce is basically siracha. 2) What took so long to prepare it? I was #27, they served #28, #29, and #30 all who ordered full meals and ordered after me 3) what kind of fusion is this? korean, vietnamese, chinese… with none of the above nationalities in the truck 4) service was slow Hate me for my review, it is what it is. Sorry. Until the next review…

Because of my love for banh mi and korean food, I tried the korean spicy pork sandwich. The korean hot sauce got too spicy at certain bites. The pork is pretty mediocre and it does not taste like authentic korean spicy pork. Portion is big and filling, however. It cost $ 8/sandwich and that’s too much. C’mon, real banh mi is $ 3 a sammie. Not somewhere I would crave or come back to.

Worst decision of the night! I got some tofu bites and there were about 10 little pieces for $ 5.50 — seriously?!? The photo is a small container box, and it was barely full. What a waste of money. I went to the Koja truck later for a huge portion of food and much better tasting. Hiyaa blows.

A nice, safe, middle of the road option for when you’re not feeling too adventurous. Which is slightly ironic considering their marketing. Not that creative or inventive. Certainly not pushing the envelope. Vietnamese banh mi with a mild-mannered twist. Perfectly tasty. But as I’m on Caltrain today, rapidly approaching the new Millbrae«Off the Grid» market, and I see them on the list, I don’t really blink. A good choice for white Midwestern in-laws or picky children. Hardcore foodies seek fulfillment elsewhere.

Hiyaaa! serves up delicious Asian-fusion grub out of a food truck. You pick a protein(lemongrass chicken, bulkogi, spicy pork, lemongrass mushrooms) and then pick a bed for it(rice, roll, fries, salad). During our visit, we tried Bulkogi on a Stuffed Roll. Paying the extra $ 2 for double meat was definitely worth it because the meat was tender, juicy, and flavorful. The Korean Seasoning on the sandwich was great, although I felt it overpowered the meat’s flavor. My last bite was just the roll with some meat, and it was absolutely great because I was able to really taste just how awesome the beef was. The Salt and Pepper Fried Chicken Bites were crispy and seasoned well, but could have been slightly better with some sauce. I’m not sure if they had sauce hidden in their truck, but we didn’t bother to go ask because the chicken bites were addictive even in our sauceless situation. They take credit cards with a Square reader, but they did one thing — that no other Off the Grid vendors did — that irked me. Every other truck there took your card, swiped it, selected 0% for the tip, and then returned your card. When the lady at Hiyaaa! taking my order handed me her iPad displaying options for tips, I was confused. Why ask me to pay 20% gratuity for a takeout order — at a food truck? While waiting for our food, I saw people split between 0% and the topmost option: 15%. Customers’ impulse decisions might earn them a bit more money, but it just seemed really shady that they were the only ones at Off the Grid doing this.

Tried the sampler combo at Off The Grid. The beef bun was good, especially die to some type of spicy mayo they include. The curry chicken was dry and very boring. Didn’t help that it was served over cold rice. The salad was good but the meat on top was dripping with oil. All in all, I’d go with the beef sandwich.
