Tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood in South Portland is this lovely gem of a theater. Housed in a converted historic building, this 180 seat community theater is volunteer-run, as I learned recently on my very first visit there to see my friend perform in Legally Blonde. As with all updated buildings, it has its quirks but they lend to the overall warmth and charm of the venue. It was obvious from the show that we saw that the performers and the audience love musical theater and that Lyric does its very best to put on the most professional, diverse shows possible. It’s great for a different kind of date night idea, a fun evening with your friends, or if you want to stay current on Maine’s local talent pool, catch an inexpensive show at Lyric. Just be sure to come a little early because there’s only street parking so you may have to hoof it a little ways.

Community theatre at it’s best! It’s hard to say what I miss most about Lyric, performing on the stage or all the great people I met there!
