A very busy fort Fort Preble was constructed back in 1808 and was not a very popular place. It’s original purpose was to keep the local people from trading with the English because of the trade embargo. Stopped anyone going in or out of the harbor to trade. The fort was finish and continue to be manned in during the War of 1812 and also served in the Civil War. Ships from the fort actually captured 23 Confederate soldiers that were trying to get into the harbor to do bad things to the city of Portland. The fort was modernized over the years and served as a military base during both WW I and WWII. It was finally deactivated and abandoned by the military in around 1950. Now venerable fort is part of the campus of the South Main Community College. It has wonderful views of the harbor and the Spring Point Ledge Light as well as several other old forts. A very cool place to crawl around and look at all the boats going by. The fort is a very popular place for weddings and picnics because of the great views and idyllic setting. Strange how a place that once was for war and violence is now a place of peace and beauty.
