Why would you name your establishment Z Bar, one might ask? Great question. I would imagine the most logical reason is because your nemesis Aaron A Aaronson decides to open his own eponymous bar and you need to prove you are the farthest thing from him and his offerings. «Screw you man! You think you’re so cool being the first listing in the phone book? — but you’re not. I am the coolest. And in the yellow pages I will show everyone the gulf between us» So you open a joint called Z bar and you do everything to prove you are the opposite of your nemesis. Which means that Aaron opened a cool bar — great décor — reasonable prices — a consistent crowd. Yup — you showed him, opposite man And now you’re closed Sniff

Just to clarify… the review from 2006 is referring to an earlier incarnation of this bar. At that time, it really did have great wine. Since then, they lost their cool Kiwi bartender and went through a variety of other changes… eventually becoming the totally dull normal bar they are now. Oh well.

This wine bar is right next to Abbey’s Lounge in Somerville, and yet is by design its polar opposite. While Abbey’s has cheap drafts and wines, and is raucous, the Z Wine Bar is peaceful, elegant, intimate, and has a list of 30 – 40 Italian wines from which to choose. Along with fine appetizers, it makes for an excellent date spot… or friendly encounter… for the middle to upper class set.
