Like others, I moved from Somerville, but still go back here. The main reason I haven’t gone with a ‘shaved head’ look is because I want to be able to come visit. And I’ve been going there 15 years, never heard politics past, «Aw, they’re all the same.»

This is MY barber shop since I discovered them 4 years ago(back when I lived up on Winter Hill). The pricing is fair, the quality is consistent, the staff(including the occassional back-up barber when Phil or Tony are away on vacation/sick) is friendly and well trained, and the traditional heart and soul of a community is obviously present within. The hours are not the most convenient for me, but I make it work out as best I can(as opposed to going to an inferior or over-priced salon closer to work or my new home); this is the only reason I don’t give them 5 stars.

What a great place! Two of the friendliest, most patriotic Somervillians you’ll ever meet. When I think of Tony & Phil I think of old school America. Tony is getting up there in age but he still cuts as good as anyone(though I secretly prefer Phil). Tony enlisted in the Navy when he was 16 years old & was sent out to do battle in WWII(true). I’m a veteran myself(Iraq) and I highly recommend veterans make this your regular barber. When I moved to Somerville, it was tough to find a good barber(though there are several shops). The day I walked in here I knew it was my place. $ 15 bucks for a regular cut/neck shave — I always leave a $ 20. I didn’t have to pay for my pre-wedding day haircut(they refused), and I’ve taken my brother-in-law who is active duty in the Navy and his money was refused as well… I’m tellin’ ya, these guys are the definition of class. Greg(other Unilocaler) shouldn’t complain about the conserverative opinions, it’s actually them talking about preserving America(I’m a Democrat and I love hearing them talk — that’s a big part of why I go there). An important note is that this place gets busy in the winter because Tony goes away for a few months, this leaves only Phil — Phil won’t rush a haircut to make more $, he still takes time & care on each customer(a plus for you in the big chair, a minus if your in the waiting chair).

I don’t think it’s a father and son business, actually. A younger guy named Phil does work with Tony, but Phil has a different last name. I’ve been here once and had my hair cut by Phil. He’s a good barber, so long as you can tolerate listening to his conservative political opinions while you sit. I would prefer not to hear them, so I’ll go elsewhere next time.

This is my new favorite barber shop. While I am also a fan of La Flamme in Harvard Square, there always seem to be different barbers working there on any given day and so the quality of the hair cut I get can vary wildly. Tony’s is a father and son operation and it’s very clear to me that his son has inherited his dad’s old fashioned values when it comes to cutting hair. He did a superb job, taking care to pay attention to all the fine details like shaving the back of the neck and ensuring that no hair went down my shirt — plus he cleaned up my always out of control eye brows without being asked — a huge bonus in my book since some barbers seem to have an issue with that when I do ask. Definitely recommended.
