I used to live across the street and ordered at least once a week for a year. The food was consistently delicious and the staff was always friendly. The rosties are one of my favorite things on the menu. Everyone that visited always enjoyed their food from here as well

So disappointing. It was an excellent idea in theory, and all if the options sounded incredible, but the reality is that you get previously frozen, low quality potato shreds burnt on the outside(and I mean charred burnt), flavorless squishy potatoes on the inside surrounding whatever cheap flavorless fillings they stuffed into the starchy core. I was so excited to try it too…

I can’t believe it had to close, but here’s to hoping for a swift re-opening! I’ve been a big fan of Potatofreak for a while now, and their rosti are the best. I first tried them because a friend said they have chicken fingers that were really something else, not the usual frozen and fried monstrosities. They are, were, great. I think they must have used potato in the crust, but whatever the secret they were juicy and crisp, just what you’d want. The fries were REALLY good too, and all of this was in a delivery! They included a menu and I saw this thing, a «Rostie», which turns out to be a classic Swiss dish of riced potato fried in a patty. More advanced versions have fillings, but the key to Potatofreak is that you would be happy just eating a lightly salted fried potato rosti with nothing else. When they had the fillings, like my favorite: cheese, ham, bacon, onion… things get out of control. Don’t ignore offerings like the Stroganoff(chicken or beef), because they’re good in their own right, and great in a loving nest of fried potato. It’s a good thing that their salads are to my liking, with a lot of shredded carrot and onion, very refreshing. Their salted cod and beef ribs are also absolutely worth trying in my opinion. I’m not sure what mix of nationalities and tastes inspired this place, and I’m sorry that condos have put a crimp in the whole operation. I for one however, will support the new location personally, and by word of mouth. Good luck guys, hang in there!

Sadly, today is the last day for Potatofreak in their Cobble Hill Shopping Center location. The owner of the center plans to demolish Cobble Hill and build a bunch of condos there, and all the tenants have to leave. We stopped by for brunch this morning to learn the news. Potatofreak’s owner is looking for a new location and you can like their Facebook page to keep up with news. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they will reopen soon. Potatofreak is a unique brunch place that specializes in rosties. If you love Waffle House’s scattered, smothered & covered hash browns, rosties are like that but on steroids. They’re like a crispy hash brown pie filled with just about any breakfast ingredient you want: eggs, sausage, vegetables, cheese. But they also serve, oddly, a full Irish breakfast. I never had the chance to try it but we did order a side of black pudding. It was fantastic: good quality, sliced and cooked just a little bit crispy. And the price is right: two people, two rosties, coffee and a side, all about $ 20. The other great things about Potatofreak are its lack of a line on Sunday mornings, its attentive, professional wait staff, the obvious care that goes into every dish. And it had no problem accommodating families and kids – the owner even brings over crayons and placemats for kids to draw on. I don’t have kids but the layout of the place was big enough that I am not bothered by other people’s children. So, I hoist a big glass of orange juice to Potatofreaks, and here’s hoping they reopen soon!

Went here for breakfast the other day and it was a good place! We had a 1 ½ year old with us and the owner didn’t blink an eye, actually brought over some crayons for him to use, which was really nice. Had the cinnamon banana bread french toast, pretty good! Another person had a potato pocket thing which was hot, plentiful, and according to him good. The location kinda sucks, but they have a parking lot which is really nice. And between the 3 of us adults, the bill was only $ 21.

My rating is for the food. If you are looking for a perfectly scrumptious, crispy, hangover curing, belly filling, pie of potatoey, cheesy deliciousness, this is the place for you! Location is not the best, as many have said. But, oh, the potato hashes. They are top notch.

Eggs Benedict was good — but the meat on that and in the hash(turkey) were fake tasting– on the rubbery side — had to take them off the plate. But the potatoes were good :)

So I ordered delivery from here for a California roastie and a egg and cheese breakfast roastie. After placing our order they told us it would be about a 45 minute wait, which was fine. However, 2 phone calls and 2 hours later it finally showed up. And it was amaaaaazing! I don’t think I’ll ever order delivery again but I would gladly stop in for a bite to eat!

First of all, yes the location isn’t great and the decour is lacking, BUT! The food is DELICIOUS! I got the swiss hash with cheese egg spinach and tomato. Basically, it’s between a stuffed latka and an egg and cheese sandwich with hash browns instead of bread. Basically, it’s delicious. Nomnomnomnomnom. Went at 10:30am on a Saturday, no line, endless coffee, cheap delicious tasty food, great pick.

Great little spot to try a new take at hash browns. The veg Swiss hash was great, wish it had more eggs but overall delish. The banana nut bread French toast was a little crumbly but pretty good. Overall a great place to try when wandering around on an empty stomach in the morning. Also, there weren’t any lines on Sunday morning, so if you don’t want to wait, then try it out!

In a word: bland. In three words: bland, bland, bland. My boyfriend and I needed some breakfast, and stopped in the Cobble Hill plaza just to hit the ATM and go to Buddy’s, but Potato Freak was right there and we were curious so… First off, I do feel bad writing a bad review of this place. It looks like a really small family operation and I’m sure they’re really trying but almost everything just kinda sucked. The place was nearly empty, and while we had our pick of tables, almost all of them had dirty dishes on them. We waited nearly 20 minutes for someone to take our order and bring some coffee(Boyfriend ordered it right when we walked in). I ordered the strawberry French toast, home fries, and«Irish sausages»(not sure what makes them Irish). After another 20 minutes, they told me they were out of strawberries. That’s fine, I asked for blueberries instead, assuming that they would be fresh(Since they emphasize that they use fresh strawberries). The blueberries were probably canned or something; tiny, almost no flavor, and kinda mushy. I received hashbrowns instead of home fries, and they were bland too. the French toast was okay, but not impressive. Sausages were tiny and bland. Boyfriend got the Hungry Man breakfast. Pancake(singular), toast, bacon, home fries, eggs, etc. The bacon was very weird… It was really thin and crunchy, and didn’t taste like bacon. Pancake was dry and flavorless. Home fries soft and flavorless. He liked their coffee though. tldr: Took over an hour to get a very bland meal that wasn’t particularly satisfying. Waitstaff is very friendly, but super slow. Also their baked goods counter does not look appealing at all.

This place is potatofreaking amazing! I don’t know what culinary geniuses invented the rostie potato(the Swiss), but it is one of the best things. Ever. Take hash browns, bake(fry?) them till golden brown and crispy and stuff with melted cheese and a filling of your choice(I went for the veggie but they also have chicken, mushrooms, hearts of palm, smoked steak, salmon, cod, shrimp stroganoff, etc, etc.). Crispy, golden, potatoey, cheesey goodness! I came here with a huge group of hungry Muslims on Eid, the holiday that marks the end of Ramadan and they were gracious about our large, late, group of hungry Muslims who haven’t eaten in the middle of the day for a month. The ambience is a little depressing — it was pretty empty, albeit on a Wednesday morning at 1030am. But the potato rostie is so awesome that I hope to continue to get my potato freak on here for years to come!

After spending 2 days and 22 hours driving a U-haul from South Carolina to my new home state of Massachusetts, I was exhausted and famished. So, once the truck was unloaded and dropped off, the first thing I did in Boston was grab something to eat. I asked my brother to pick a place because I could barely think straight. He hopped on the Unilocal app and looked for the closest restaurants that sounded somewhat interesting. For some reason he decided to go with PotatoFreak. I was apprehensive as we pulled into the strip mall. Even more so when we walked inside to discover we were the only people there. We discussed leaving but I didn’t have the energy and chose to stick it out. The menu, as you would suspect, was all about potatoes. Baked potatoes, potato pancakes, fries. The featured item was the many different types of rostie they offered. My brother ordered the California Rostie which was filled with ham, bacon, onion, mozzarella and cream cheese. I have no idea what makes those ingredients Californian. I got the grilled chicken salad and we both grabbed soft drinks from the cooler. After a longer wait than I had anticipated, our food arrived at the table. The rostie was basically a humongous potato pancake filled with stuff. It was a little greasy and needed a lot of salt. My chicken was grilled on a flat top in a ton of oil and was served with iceberg lettuce, cooked carrot, pickled onion and a side of oily, separated balsamic dressing. The lesson is, if you want t a salad, don’t go to a place with potato in the name. If you’ve never had rostie before and want to try it, maybe come to this place. And do it now before they’re no longer around.

So I guess you gotta like potatoes. I’m guessing that the guys what opened this place were like OYMATE. LESFACKINGPOP A FUSSAHABOUTSTEELRUDDSWOT. If they were users of cockney rhyming slang. But seriously. So they call ‘em «rostie» potatoes. Rosti, roastie, rostie, whatever you call ‘em. It’s a delightful crust of crispy hash browns, inside of which is more potatoes and a boatload of whatever else you want. It’s a Guy Fieri food, which if you’re in the mood for it, is delightful. It is, however, 13 days worth of carbs, calories from fat and cholesterol, but it’s freaking delightful. The fries are tasty, but don’t get ‘em to go, as they sog up fast. Stick with a Rostie and bloat yourself up.

If you’re in the mood for high calorie, fill you up, cure a hangover, fuel after a 15 mile run, and get your greese craving satisfied type of place — you’re ready to stop by Potato Freak. Potato: Get them rosti style(shaved, encasing your choice of fillings, comes out smelling like a giant french fry. Then you start breaking into it as you eat and find it oozing cheese, or sausage, or fish, or whatever you chose. Get them baked. I haven’t done that yet. They have Rosti, why are you still looking at the menu. Yeah, they have fries too! Though honestly, stick with the rosti. Freak: Aside from being a freak of a restaurant for having so many ways to serve potatos, they are the only place I’ve seen serving Rosti. Its DIFFERENT. Which is something thats getting hard to come by, and still get dinner for less than 10 bucks. The location is a pain in my butt — weird strip mall in that part of somerville I’d never been to — but its worth the trip.

I had such high hopes for this place. I’m not a HUGE carbaholic but needed to fulfill my curious side. Ordered the breakfast rostie with spinach, feta and tomato. Also got a side order of pancakes. Place was empty when I got there and pretty much stayed empty. I was able to get the nice man to change the channel on the tv from brazilian tv to Julia Childs. Perfect! Then some other guy(manager?) decided to get the remote and mess with the tv. Screwed it all up. After he gave up he handed me the remote which was sticky and kinda dirty. So what do I put on the tv? Phantom Gourmet of course. But after a few minutes I felt guilty and put Julia back on. As for the food it was ok. Nothing more. Maybe the dinner rosties are more flavorful but the breakfast rostie’s was bland. It looked like it was just hashbrowns made into a thick patty to hold the spinach, feta and tomato. There was no seasoning at all. Side order of pancakes was more like side order of pancake(1). Very rarely do I feel bad giving a not so great review. Usually it is an honest straight forward evaluation regardless of how many stars I give out. This one stings a little. Unfortunately it is what it is…

Stayed up last night drinking? Check. Miserably hungover? Check. Got it together enough to order from PotatoFreak? Check. Commence recuperation. Every time I’ve been, it’s a ghost town inside, but the chefs are cooking up a storm. Probably because so many patrons are hangover-stricken, and ordering delivery. The food is pretty damn good. And cheap! The swiss hash is incredible. I ate half of my boyfriend’s. Girlfriend tax. I got the strawberry french toast which was also amazing. A little too sweet for me(not their fault — I should have known better since I’m not big on sweet), which worked out since my boyfriend has a sweet tooth(and I ate half of his food.) The service is really friendly and attentive! The waitress was constantly cleaning. After a while of watching her scrub and dust every nook and cranny, I realized she must be the owner. No employee ever would put that much care into polishing a shelf display. It’s tucked in the far corner of a strip mall close to Union Sq. A little tough to spot. The best part is how it has made me the cool kid among my friends and classmates — they LOVE this place. I told a couple people about it being perfect for breakfast after a night of drinking, and it has spread like wildfire. People make plans specifically involving drinking followed by PotatoFreak. They don’t always deliver, though… so be prepared to have to leave your house. Sunglasses. Pedialyte. PotatoFreak. You can make it.

Me likey! Went here for breakfast and had the Swish Hash Roastie stuffed with cheddar cheese, egg and ham. My only complaint is that I wished it was more buttery. I actually found this place thanks to Unilocal while searching for hashbrowns… and that’s pretty much what the Roastie is. It’s a giant hashbrown ball you can fill with stuff. The restaurant looks kinda like a cafeteria, but it was nice and clean. You order at the register and they deliver your food a drinks. The owner/register guy was really friendly and nice. I’m interested in trying the spanish tortilla and the potato cake which is a mixture of the hashbrown AND mashed potatoes… holy crap! bring it!!!
