Gentle Giant Restoration & Conservation

We have only good things to say about Gentle Giant’s restoration and conservation service. They repaired a 200-​year-​old Biedermeier chest for us. It needed a significant amount of work: missing veneer, cracks in the wood, water damage to feet, drawers didn’t run smoothly, hinge on the door was loose, some lock/​hardware issues. They matched the veneer beautifully (difficult to do because it’s unusually thick and has a lovely old marled finish), and resolved the other issues as well. Now the chest looks beautiful and runs smoothly (thanks, Hugh!).
And they were so friendly and helpful along the way: Rob talked through all our options with us in detail, and we decided together what was worth doing and what wasn’t. And they really worked with us on the price. This is highly skilled work (Rob and Hugh really know what they are doing!), and another repair/​conservation business had given us a MUCH higher quote.
Not only did they do excellent work at a very reasonable rate, they did it in a timely manner, and kept us informed of their progress along the way. They even invited us in to see the work in progress, and showed us some of the other wide range of projects they’re working on (not just furniture, but also paintings and stone work, etc.) — really interesting to see. They clearly take pride and pleasure in their work, and love to see beautiful antiques restored to glory! This company is a department of the best residential moving company in the country, Gentle Giant Moving. So, yes, the level of service, professionalism and expertise is consistent in this area of operations.
The staff is knowledgeable, informative and friendly. I visited the workshop and enjoyed learning about available services, highly experienced artisans’ niches of expertise, and informed, sensitive opinions. I saw a great variety of periods, quality and style of pieces all treated with the same respect and care.
They have restored five pieces of my furnishings so far (including antiques and vintage items with special veneer and finish considerations), with another three in the works (including a desk rebuilt and restored with museum quality attention to detail) and at least three more I plan to send their way (including plaster and gilded sconces).
