American Heritage Animal Hospital

I am updating my review because this office is under new ownership. My review was based on a tragic event which occured several years ago, before Dr Cat McGinnis bought the practice. She is not responsible for what happened then. As you can read below, Dr McGinnis wrote a thoughtful note offering her condolences and detailing the care that *should* be given to a pet under anesthesia. I did a bit of research before updating this review which left me with the impression that Dr McGinnis is a compassionate and very capable doctor. I wish she had been there years ago when I took my dog to American Heritage. I’m sure the outcome would have been much different.
All of the negative reviews here on Unilocal were written before Dr McGinnis took over the practice. There are some very favorable, recent reviews here of her and American Heritage, but they are not « Unilocal recommended reviews,» so you’ll have to click on the link at the bottom of the business listing to see them. I would probably even consider taking my pets to her, but they already have an established relationship with another vet.

We brought our new puppy to this Hospital for all of its initial shots. From the beginning we questioned the decisions of the vet. She would not accept the documentation that showed that the puppy had already had an initial set of shots (and deworming) by the breeder. So, she made us get an additional set of shots. In our opinion this is just a ploy to get more money from the customer.
Also, after researching her prices for services they are either mid priced or on the high end.
However we were willing to overlook these things because her office was convienient to our home. To save money we decided to order Heartguard from
. Because Heartguard requires a prescription they had to contact the vet. And, she wanted $ 8.50 to just write the prescription.
After talking with them, they claimed that they were liable for thier prescriptions. Now, how $ 8.50 helps that liability, I’ll never know. The Heartguard is around $ 20 for six months online, so $ 8.50 is a significant portion of that.
My wife and I have been to many doctors and optometrists over the years. We have NEVER been charged an additional fee for a prescription.
We had previously purchased the heart medication from this vet so she knew that our dog was up to date. (Our last visit was just a month ago.)
This is just a ploy to get money. When I offered to not return to her office unless she drop the $ 8.50 fee, she chose to stick to her guns.
This was the final straw for us. I’m sick and tired of people trying to nickle and dime us. She didn’t deserve 10 cents for that prescription and she will not be getting a single penny from me ever again.
