Veronica’s Bakery & Cafe

I have to say, I have not tried any of their pastries but I have enjoyed their food! Their service is fast and the food is pretty decent for a decent price. I would recommend this place to anyone that does not like waiting in long lines and enjoys eating traditional Central American food! Their pupusas, yuca con chicharron, and soups are delicious!

If I could «award» zero stars, I would. Because this place takes the cake, and boy do that have lots of it. I am in the same boat as Kendra L. Like my fellow Unilocaler, I did my research and double checked the WAMU online directory to confirm that this establishment did indeed participate in WAMU’s membership benefit program, offering members a 2-​for-​1 pastry deal. Also similar to Kendra L.‘s experience, I encountered both puzzlement and hostility from the staff, who are non-​native speakers of English. Luckily, as a Spanish speaker, I was able to navigate the language barrier but it was of little help. First, the woman behind the counter informed me that in order to be eligible for the deal, I had to spend a minimum of $ 5. I complied by ordering an additional item only to be told, as soon as I paid, mind you, that she would not honor the deal. Excuse me, what? Poor service all around. The icing on the cake (bakery puns) is there was NO SOAP IN THE BATHROOM. No dispenser, no bar soap, no hand soap, no soap anywhere to be found. Um, major health code violation, anyone? The baked goods I purchased went straight into the garbage.

This business was listed as a participating member of the WAMU MemberCard program — I even double-​checked online before heading out. I thought it would be a great way to try a new place and maybe become a regular customer. The staff didn’t speak English and had no idea about the MemberCard (2 for 1 dinner), which is not their fault. The manager was called on the phone and I had to try to explain it to her. She had no idea and asked if I could come back on Monday. ?? Then she called the owner who called the restaurant and wanted to talk to me — flatly denying that that location participated in the program and that they would not honor the deal. I should not have waited around that long but I wanted some closure — I won’t be giving that owner any of my dollars or sending anyone that way.

Friendly staff and good baked good for a low price. I can’t claim to be an expert on Latin American baked goods, but these were nummy!
