Anne is a professional who looks out for the best interest to rescue horses from abused and neglectful homes and looks to services for vet and training care to make them adoptable. While the web sites before and after horse pictures are admirable of its success, one of the links provided on it as recommended ‘professional services’ are not accurate, rather potentially dangerous to those that trust presidents feedback and pay for such services from organization’s vice president. The Terrel Riding Academy is owned by vice president, Maike Terrell, of CFH and uses untrained rescue horses as lesson horses. I witnessed riders with unapproved or no riding helmets, wearing tennis shoes, and horse rearing straight up after a kid was placed on it, only later to be put on a mustang, and left by themself. Maike walked up after I decided to help kid learn basics and Maike said horse doesn’t respond that way… hinting it uses ESP from Maike not to listen to riding aids, rather to what she wants it to do in her mind because of special bond they have. When I adopted my horse from the facility, a CFH requirement involves having appropriate shelter for horse yet Maike has about ten horses on her small ‘academy’ pasture with no such shelter. While Maike is super sweet, friendly with gift of gab, has drive to succeed, and ways to get people to donate, she unfortunately is without the skills and horse sense necessary to do it safely . My first visit to her ‘academy’ occurred with intention I was going to pay her to use her arena. However, upon arrival, I watch her order photographer to take pictures of me and my daughter, later putting unfortunate ones up online, making it appear we were new students of hers. The CFH facility is well organized and on site care takers do a great job of caring for horses. Anne, the president, is informative, helpful, responsible, and trusting. I mention trusting as she gives local ‘trainers’ such as the ‘academy’ benefit of the doubt that they know what they are doing and going to train rescues to make them more adoptable. Note that the horse I adopted was in a rescue type environment since 2011… so almost four years later, it still did not trust humans to get caught, receive any vet care, nor accustomed to hoof handling, and determined to be put down after a year at CFH due to no progess in training or adopter. Seems a bit hypocritical for an anti abuse and neglect organization. I am not a horse trainer, horses are not my profession… just a little common patience and plain positive reinforcement has worked to gain it’s trust. Overall, VP Maike and President Anne do rescue and care for the horses they get and conduct activities to receive enough donations to feed horses to healthy weight, usually vet them, send out for training, and try to get them adopted. I think they both love and have a passion for horses. On a final note, this organization is currently advertised and listed under horse boarding, which it is not. Its a horse rescue, a not-for-profit organization. I understand Maike advertises horse boarding to privately owned horse owners at her ‘academy’ but this non-profit horse organization is currently miscategorized as a horse boarding business instead of a horse rescue.
