This was a top-notch little sit down pizza joint/restaurant several years ago, but of late it has deteriorated. As others have noted, the owner is grumpy(always has been), operates the restaurant alone and is only open from Friday to Monday. One weekend the restaurant didn’t even open. The whole place is in bad repair and I’m always afraid of falling through the porch floor. The bread there is(usually) excellent, but I pre-ordered 3 loaves recently and not only were they burned, but I was charged $ 4 per loaf as compared to the previous week when it was $ 3/loaf. I like the stuffed bread too, but am not so anxious to order again for company. The only pizza that is good is the deep dish sesame crusted pie. However, you only get a small piece for $ 3. The regular pie isn’t crispy enough. The soups were always good, especially the smoked chicken and brown rice soup. When the place was bustling and there were other cooks, the food was excellent. I’d love to see this place turn around and be what it used to be. Without server and cooking help, the owner cannot give the customer the proper service and attention needed.

What happened to this place? It use to be delicious. Now it is just dirty with a grumpy man behind the counter. We left without ordering.

I was here over the weekend and was disappointed with the quality and service. I have visited this place many years ago and I remember it being great food and service. We waited an hour for a burnt NY style pizza, it might have been good except the burnt flavor took away any redeeming qualities. We were using the grated cheese to give the burnt crust some flavor but the owner asked for it back so he can give it to another table, apparently they only have one container in the whole place. Anyway it was $ 23 for a lrg NY style pizza with pepperoni & mushrooms and a Pepsi. A lot of people walked out before the guy came to take I would recommend any other place.

Food is good, owner kind of grumpy but we were served well. Only one person is in charge so don’t expect fast service. You can call before getting there so you won’t wait that long. The dish to ask is BBQ ribs.

Just say NO! Ordered the chicken parm sandwich, huge mistake. It must have been made with leftovers from the barbecue they sell. There was bone and cartilage in my first bite, the chicken was dark meat, very gamey tasting and greasy. I couldn’t eat it, just nibbled at the roll. The only up side was they had beer, and my kids said they liked the pizza(they are only 7 and 9, so take that with a grain of salt.). Kids liked the birch beer too.

Winchells used to be a great quality pizza place. Service was very good, but in past couple years they’ve lost main staff and have cut costs via ingredients. This has caused quality of food and service to go down considerably. The owner now runs the place by himself and seems to be struggling. Wish I could support more local business but it’s no longer worth the high price.

ORDER A STROMBOLI. Don’t bother with the other things on the menu. Yes the guy will be grumpy when you ask for it, leave him a tip and you might make him smile. It will also take a while to make but in the end you will have one beautiful freaking sandwich. I was floored.

One of the key success metrics of any business is «hospitality.» The entire staff acts totally indifferent to their product and their customers. Pity, as it could be a nice restaurant if some effort was applied. I had a cheeseburger. How do you screw up a cheeseburger? It was just a big hunk o’ flavorless meat. No condiments. I think there was cheese on it, but again, it was tiny and had no flavor. The buns were thick, so that by the time I finished my «cheeseburger,» I was so over-stuffed with lousy meat and buns the size of Indiana, I felt nauseous. My friend had some sort of mozzarella patties that were so uninspiring, he had to cook them again at home to try and save them. He got one down and fed the rest to the dogs.

Should be 0 stars, rude service and poor food quality. Soups all taste like smoke because they use the meat from the barbeque that doesn’t sell. Staff acts like they would rather be somewhere else. Time for new owners.

Amazing BBQ, amazing bread, salads, soups, great craft beers. I’ve been a dozen times and never had a complaint. Gets a little hectic on sunday afternoon’s during ski season. You can tell the owners and workers care about what they are doing. Go now!

WHATHAPPENED to their great tasting pizza? Used to be the stuff dreams are made of… crispy crust, delicious sauce… even oversized slice, but not so much anymore. Within the last few months we went back three times, figuring the first bland pie was a fluke… but, sadly, no! After two more tries of disappointing pizza, we gave up. Obviously there was a change. New chef? New recipe?(they wouldn’t admit to either). Can’t really talk about other items on the menu(haven’t had anything but the pizza) but we do miss going to this cute little find.

Such a wonderful gem in the Catskills. Homemade food with the most delicious soups. Their Beef Brisket Soup will make you melt. Fresh beer and root beer on tap. Perfect way to start or end your weekend getaway.

I’ve been coming up to this part of the Catskills since the mid 1980s as a kid with my family. Winchell’s Corner opened shortly afterwards and has gone through various incarnations, always serving pizza but reinventing itself in various ways. Right now, this place serves very good pizza, very good bbq, other comfort good, and has a decent selection of beers and other drinks. Prices are quite reasonable as well. This place works best if you take a mid-sized group, so you can sample the pizza, bbq and some appetizers to share. My wife and I always end up ordering too much food if it’s just us! The one thing I wish is that it stayed open just a bit later on Friday nights. It’s usually closed by the time we get out of work and make it upstate.
