I called in a takeout order of the 1 lb shredded pork bbq, a pint each of baked beans and coleslaw, and 4 buns. It’s called their Picnic Special and it’s supposedly only available as a takeout according to the menu. It was ready when I arrived about 15 mins later. Nice people working behind the counter too. The shredded pork was dry and tough. It really didn’t have much of a flavor. The sauce, which was in a separate container, didn’t help make it taste any better. Hubs thought the pork needed more sauce but that wouldn’t have made it less tough. The coleslaw had good texture and flavor. The baked beans tasted like it came from a can. I was so hoping we would like the bbq here since we pass by it regularly. Our bill came to less than $ 18 and we had some bbq left over that hubs will polish off tomorrow(after he adds bottled sauce to it). I just think a bbq place should know how to avoid making tough dry pork. That’s their thing, they make it every day. Shredded pork is a huge part of their menu. It should never be tough and dry. We won’t be back.

One of the best BBQ’s on the planet! Carolina style at it’s finest. Juicy Chopped meat is Hickory smoked out back overnight, and the vinegar based sauce is delicious, as is the special recipe slaw, which is made to go with the meat. Sides are simple but good. Takes you off the beaten path, but it’s well worth it. Indoor seating is cosy, but there are some outdoor picnic tables. Staff is friendly and courteous,

It’s Tuesday, 9÷16÷14, and I ‘ve just gotten back with a rack of ribs from Boss H. I open the package and there’s no sauce to be found. I thought, we’ll maybe they’ve sauced the ribs enough so that, no matter what I think I see, it’ll be good eats. Nope. In fact, I was so confused by what I expected I called them to ask if the sauce had been left out by accident. I’m sorry to say that the answer(?) I received was, uh, incomplete and hard to understand. Ribs, as far as I figure, should be visibly sauced with extra offered without question or the need to request it. The meat was good, but was it barbque? Not without a lot more sauce.

No pit, no chimney, no hickory smoke, no piles of hickory wood so how is the«Bar B Q» smoked? I don’t think it is cause I can’t detect not even a hint of smoky flavor. This last time I ate here the ‘Q was wet and mushy. The dip which I guess is supose to be the Lexington vinegar dip has no flavor. I’ve lived in the area for 19 years and have only eaten here 3 times and all 3 times someone else paid for it. I would never go here on my own or shell out my own money to eat here. There are much, much better Bar B Q joints out there.

I drove to Boss Hog BBQ a few months ago, because of all the great reviews from locals. I was surprised at how small and cramped the restaurant was inside. The tables were almost on top of each other. I was also surprised to see that the eldest employee looked to be about sixteen years old. I dejectedly prepared myself for the inevitable let down, which did not come. The barbecue wasn’t anything special, but it was okay. Barbecue really has to be dry or filled with fat and gristle for me to not enjoy the experience. I had coleslaw and fries, and those were okay as well. The fried cornbread sticks? This was a new one for me. As others have noted, they were basically about the crunch. I used them to «sop» up barbecue sauce, ketchup, pork drippings, and stray bits of food, so they served their purpose. The pricing was reasonable, and the service was good. I enjoyed a conversation with a retired gentleman who taught glider flying at a nearby airport. He was reading a book that someone had gifted him, and from time to time he read me passages. This may sound weird, and granted this was unusual, but a very enjoyable and unexpected way to have lunch. What can I say, the man was interesting. I was a little annoyed at the amount of trash in the parking lot, which was simply filthy. To me, this shows a lack of pride in the business, and a total lack of class by those too lazy and uncouth to walk the ten feet to a trash can. So far, this has been a one and done, since I didn’t think that the place was good enough to revisit. I would eat here if I were passing through the area, but this isn’t «destination» ‘Q.

Only bad thing about this restaurant is they aren’t open on Sundays… but you can’t blame ‘em. Awesome family owned restaurant that places their pride and passion in it. Incredible food. You might just find a race car driver in the neighborhood eating here as well.

This hole in the wall was surprisingly good. They had really tasty bbq and delicious sides. Good: One of the people in my group got a full pound of their chopped bbq, ate half of it for dinner and was happy he had the other ½ lb to go for later. I think everyone in our group of 7 finished their bbq clean off their plates. I got the potato salad and it had great flavor. Definitely one of the better potato salads I’ve had in NC. The«spicy fries» aren’t spicy at all and are just curly fries. They were still good enough to fight over and some people poured Texas Pete on it to make them somewhat spicy. This place also has two picnic tables outside. They don’t have too much seating for larger groups in this place, but the picnic tables are in great shape, and I brought my dog so we were very happy with the outdoor seating. Bad: Their corn bread was horrible. They came in the form of bread sticks and had absolutely no flavor. Really disappointing since I love corn bread. Someone in our group had to eat it with their baked beans to give it flavor. The rest of us just tossed them all onto one plate and threw it out :( But besides the corn bread sticks and the place being ran by teenagers, it has great northern bbq and was great value for the price.

This is one of those hometown favorites. Before leaving for NYC and Japan, I just had to stop in for a BBQ platter to hold me over for the next few months. I don’t normally stray far from the platters so I can’t tell you how good the other stuff is, but the platter is great! Definitely try it if you’re driving through good olé’ Sherrills Ford!

My husband & I are locals — just 2 miles away. I am very particular about my BBQ — won’t eat it just anywhere. WELL, Boss Hog is one of the best BBQ places around! Not just Pork BBQ but u can get BBQ Chicken as well — very good. They have great Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, etc. I always get a BBQ Sandwich with«white» slaw(you can get the red slaw also). Their Corn Fritters are awesome — sweet — really good. Cornbread sticks are great — you don’t get these just anywhere. I say everything at Boss Hogg is great — if you love BBQ, etc. at an inexpensive price this is the place. Makes me hungry just thinking about it!

I love Boss Hog! Their barbeque is always so moist and delicious and their hush puppies are made to order. The restaurant is a hole in the wall, but it’s very clean and you will always get good service. They do cater, but they do not deliver. Whenever I have guests from out of town and they ask for NCBBQ, I always head straight to Boss Hog. Highly recommend!

I live close by, I’ve gone there 5 times over the last 7 years. About a year ago, I bought a pork plate, it was old and very dry. The hush puppies are good though.

Mediocre. And not really«barbecue» either. No pit. No hickory piles out back. No flavor. Teenagers cookin’ and runnin’ the place. One notch away from being a place that I avoid. 2 stars on their best day.

I’m a local. You always want to ask the locals where they eat. .. it’s Boss Hog BBQ. Extremely casual, nothing fancy. Just really good BBQ. If I ever moved away from here this is the place I would crave the most. Nice down home country BBQ served perfectly. They offer two types of slaw, vinegar or mayo. The corn sticks are delicious. The ribs are fantastic. Well, it’s all good. Go and see for yourself :)

Yummy, yummy, yummy! Great BBQ in a «hole in the wall» location. I know there are some ‘cue purists who won’t go to a «chain». You folks would love this place! I met some friends here for lunch and we were all very pleased. I had the sliced BBQ platter, which came on one of those three-section sytrofoam plates. The two smaller sections contained baked beans(which didn’t seem home made but were still delicious) and a spicy slaw which had a home made texture and taste. The main course was a nicely sliced BBQ beef with a tangy and zesty sauce poured over it. These were accompanied by three fried cornbread sticks. I’ve never seen anything like this before and if I was headed home to a fridge, I might have gotten a bunch of them to go! The friends I met had the chopped BBQ platter, which was the same deal except that the meat was chopped up into very small pieces and already mixed with their tangy sauce. All three friends said that it was excellent! There’s a soda fountain(Pepsi products) and a big urn of sweet tea. Not too sweet. With ice and a piece of lemon, it did not need extra sugar or extra water. It was simply excellent. They did have some desserts, including cherry and apple turnovers as well as chocolate cake. One cherry turnover was consumed and enjoyed. Boss Hog is a little hard to find — 7 miles west of I-77 over a few Lake Norman causeways and past intersections, but there it is. The picture I posted should help. It’s a very small cinder block place with big windows and only a few tables inside. Not much parking, but the isolated location works against it being really crowded. From my seat, I could see into the kitchen area. It was very clean and organized. The girls working the place were very pleasant and welcoming. One overhead TV was tuned in to the Weather Channel. Would I come here again? If I am in the area, absolutely! Excellent!
