Pigs, A Sanctuary

Wonderful little farm in the middle of nowhere so be prepared to get lost the 1^st time around :) Came here with a group and received a thorough guided tour of the farm.
A few interesting facts:
— They rescue neglected/​abused animals including dogs, cats, potbellied pigs, and more.
— Their operating costs are $ 25k + monthly
— Must make an appointment for a visit or group tour
— Some of the rescues they take in are animals that were previously used for racing, fighting, etc. Some of the cats & dogs came from animal hoarders.
You will find that a visit to the farm is very humbling. For many of us, it’s out of sight, out of mind when it comes to animal cruelty. We just don’t think about it on a daily basis but when you visit the farm & hear the stories & see firsthand the effects of what these animals have been through, it can be life changing.
Overall, a wonderful place to bring a group of kids, adults or just gather some friends for a fun & enlightening afternoon.

This place, my friends, is a labor of love.
With a very limited staff and limited resources, Pigs provides a loving home for up to 400 animals at any given time. As my friend Noël O. mentioned below, this includes pigs, horses, donkeys, dogs, cats and goats. When appropriate, some of the dogs and cats are available to be adopted. The stories of all of the animals will break your heart but ultimately their resilience will astound you.
Please, please email or call to arrange a visit. It’s just a short drive from the DC area and makes a great day trip. The director, Melissa, graciously answered all of our many, many questions and made sure we had a stellar experience. Word of warning: this is not a petting zoo and this is not a regular farm. This is a sanctuary, where the animals will be allowed to live out their lives in peace.

It costs a LOT to keep this place going and without it, where would abused and neglected animals go? I’m grateful that Pigs exists and that I got a chance to visit.

What an amazing day trip from DC! Thanks to Lauren C, I tagged along on an adventure she wanted to pursue about two hours away from the DC metro area. This animal sanctuary, although obviously catering to the suillines (pig is to suilline as cow is to bovine), is a repository for horses, donkies, dogs, cats, and goats. All told there are 350 – 400 animals on the premises at any given time.
My friend contacted them through their website and scheduled a tour of the facility with their Director of Operations, Melissa. She graciously took us around the land to observe multiple breeds of pigs in their natural habitat (ever heard the expression «happier than a pig in mud?»), and I won’t lie, there was more than one time I wanted to dive into that mud hole with them. The cool thing is some of these animals were dropped off as young as a few weeks old and staff have hand cared for each one according to its needs.
I haven’t checked it out yet, but according to my friend there is an Amazon wish list for this organization of all sorts of materials, anything from animal treats to larger ticket items. I’d recommend checking the place out, spreading the word about this amazing place, and doing what you can to help these amazing people with their work.
