I guess still being alive makes me give this place 5 stars, haha. A few months ago I was having stomach/chest area pains that felt like bad indigestion and heart burn. I took several OTC meds to try and self remedy my pains, but they failed, so I went to CVS and purchased a few more OTC items and tried some more. I also turned to Google and did lots of research. Which does not do a lot of good being my symptoms could have been anything from heart burn to a heart attack, ha. So I called a 24 hr nurse hotline, it was now about 5 am, and I was not able to sleep due to the constant pain. The nurse was not able to pin point the issue either based on my answers to her questions. So she told me to get to the Emergency Room immediately. I told her it was only about 1 mile away and I could drive, she said No, do not drive, call 911 for an ambulance. Well, being a bit stubborn, and having had this pain over 12 hours already, and being I felt I could drive the man inside of me said it would take long for an ambulance to get here, than for me to drive myself. So I drove myself, haha. Side note: the new hospital they are slowly getting built is not located in the middle of town, but way out at the edge of town by i74 and St Rd 9, which is miles from most residents. I went to the current hospital in the middle of town. I parked and walked into the ER, they were not busy at all, I told the nurse of my chest pains, and they immediately got me into a room and in a bed, asked me about my pain, medical history, meds I am on, etc, and basic admittance questions, took samples of my blood, hooked me up to an IV, wires placed all over my body, EKG, they did an in bed X-Ray, and rolled my bed into another room and took, I believe it’s called a cat scan, of my chest and stomach area. They also gave me a shot of, I think they said morphine, to help with my pain, and being new to hospitals and powerful meds, this was a great pain reducer, haha! I felt it run thru my IV into my arm making it tingle and feel warm, then 1 second later, boom! My entire body was tingling and feeling warm. Wow, I had no idea medicine could zip thru a persons entire body in less than 2 seconds. I instantly started feeling less pain, after the past 12 hours of suffering. So this was great. There were several nurses busily buzzing around me non-stop running all the test they could very quickly. So the doctor could analyze the results and diagnose me. The doctor had also stopped in briefly to speak to me. The entire staff made me feel comfortable, answered any questions I had, and did their jobs in an excellent and rapid way. I felt like I was going to be okay with all of them working on me. They treated me very nicely, with dignity, and like I was a human being. After all the tests came back the doctor came in and told me I had gallstones flaring up inside my gallbladder and needed to have surgery in the next couple weeks to have my gallbladder removed, so the stones won’t make their way into other parts of my body and cause much more excruciating pain, and be harder to retrieve and require instant surgery to remedy the situation. So after all of this about 5 hours had passed and it was now about 10 am. To be released I needed someone to come to the hospital to get me since they did not want me driving for a few more hours. So my mother and brother came and we all left together. This was a bit of a nerve racking ordeal, a bit scary, as I did not know what was wrong with me. So all worked out fine, I had my surgery and gallbladder removed soon afterwards, and the pain has not returned. The actions of the entire staff of the hospital were great, and if I ever need to go to the ER again(this was my first visit to an ER for myself), I would be happy to go to Major Hospital in Shelbyville. Some people call these small town hospitals band aide stations, but for me on that night, they did everything I think a large big city hospital would have done. And the small town staff were very professional and nice the entire time. I hope I never have to go back, but I know I will be in good hands if I do, haha.
