October was the time to pay our property taxes. Since I have a general distrust of the US Postal Service to make a timely delivery I decided to opt to pay our taxes in person. Upon arrival there was plenty of street parking directly in front of the Old Courthouse. I parked, went up the front stairs, and walked through this grand historical building. Signs along the way in the main hallway offer you good directions to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. I entered the Office and was cheerfully greeted by a clerk that was standing at the front counter. I handed her our property tax invoice and the payment check. Within a minute she confirmed our homestead exemption, entered the payment into the computer system, printed a detailed receipt and stapled it to the property tax invoice. She handed it back to me and the entire transaction was complete. Wow, that is efficient government at work.
