The place is open. And the sushi is good for its location. Only place I know so far that has muchi ice cream.

It would’ve been nice to actually try the food prior to leaving a review however that didn’t happen. As I went to open the door, a younger guy opens the door and looks at me questioningly. There was a brief awkward moment where I thought he was opening the door to allow me in, however he then advised me that they closed a few minutes ago. I, confused, looked at the hours posted 10″ away on the door which confirmed that they were 53 minutes away from closing. I then heard a girl in the background announce that they were going to the fair. Not cool Sumo, not cool.

I have had a few nights of slow service but their food is ALWAYS spectacular! Did take out once, it’s definitely worth eating at the restaurant!

Small place but they have cheap bento boxes and the sushi may seem expensive on the menu but they are hearty portions. The wait staff is very friendly and helpful. And You can go there and make your own roll. They have a huge selection of ingredients. I go there at least once a week and it will be my first meal after I have my baby in 3 weeks!

Sumo is a great sushi restaurant and a gem. Affordable sushi done right. Colorful décor and friendly service. We tried several sushi rolls which were delicious.

What a great hole in the wall! Stumbled into this place on a joy ride. Not the largest selection, but clean, great staff, we had the hibachi, ginger and shrimp sauce immediately served. The steak was just right, shrimp… good taste. Then tried the fried ice cream! Never had anything like it. Try it!

I liked it. The only problem is its very warm inside which can make the dining experience not as comfortable.

Awesome little sushi place, a total gem in Shelby. Definitely worth it, for the expensive rolls or the cheap rolls the food is great. Comparable to any big-city sushi joint. We will return!

Hands down the best sushi place in Shelby and most of Charlotte. Has extremely good prices as well. The place looks like a hole in the wall but the food is really really good.

We tried this place after Sushi Dojo. This is far and beyond the better of the two. You have to try the honeymoon and the crazy dog rolls. Pretty good rolls. The servers are young but pretty nice. Sometimes they’ll forget something like chopsticks or plates but after a gentle reminder they will bring what you need. The furniture and finish around the place could stand a little upgrading. Everything looks very used for the place to be so new. The cleaning solution for the tables have a bit of a strong odor which can sometimes take away from the dining experience. The owner is very nice as well. I dine here pretty often and will come back again. Probably the best sushi place in Shelby.

Our favorite sushi place! We live in Shelby, NC but are from larger cities where there are more sushi options, and we are so happy to have this quaint little space so close to home! Service is always courteous, the rolls are ONPOINT, the sushi chef is totally friendly and his recommendations are terrific. They finally added spirits and if you like it spicy there are some great options! Love love love Sumo!

I travel for a living and live in Kings Mountain. I have to say this place is just as good if not better than most of the other sushi restaurants I have been to over the years. I was hesitant to try it because I didn’t think you could get good sushi here. Glad to say I was very wrong. This will be my new favorite place to eat. Great service, great food and cold beer. What more can you ask for?

When the place first opened the food was ok, the service not great. As long as the owner, a super nice guy, was on hand, things went better. After awhile, had to start being very specific about the food. It was undercooked and tasteless. The owner would say«I’ve talked to him about that…» and would elaborate. Sushi always warm, eww. Then the service became really bad. A waitress and her daughter, the main employees, are very rude, not customer oriented at all. If something never came out and we would ask, they would say it was the cook’s fault and they couldn’t help it if we didn’t get something. What about keeping up with your order and saying something to the cook??? The daughter would not wait on us on our last trip after we asked for different parts of our order several times. We tried to be as easy going as possible but she just got worse. She and her mother were loudly complaining about our table in the back and we and the whole restaurant could hear. The owner was not present but his wife was and she did nothing. I waited and spoke to the waitress in private after we finished and she said, «I ain’t done nothing wrong. I can’t help it when food doesn’t come up!» She added, «I figured you weren’t going to tip so I quit waiting on your table.» I told her I had every intention of tipping her but now because of her lack of desire to help the customers I had changed my mind and none of us would ever come back. She said that was fine, she was a great and she’d get her tips elsewhere. Not the way to represent the restaurant or the owner’s interests at all. Again, we had witnessed on several visits her and her mother acting as if they were the owners and treating customers with little respect. The whole atmosphere of the place had become crass and redneck, with them yelling from the kitchen out to customers and yelling across the restaurant to each other. The food became consistently poorly cooked, either raw or mushy and always under seasoned. We will never go back and will warn everyone to go elsewhere. It is simply not worth it.

I love sushi and am so happy to find a delicious, affordable sushi place so close to our new home in Shelby! It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but the inside is clean and cute. My husband and I had spicy tuna roll, Dynasty Roll, and(my favorite) Snow White roll. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. Looking forward to going back again!

Okay so I have now tried the food twice and my opinion hasn’t changed. The sushi compared to where I used to eat in carrboro/Chapel Hill is not that great(and I won’t even start comparing it to Restaurant Row in NYC). Anyway, we had even got some takeout for party appetizers and again were not impressed. The tempura mushrooms, broccoli florets, etc were all cut in half like they were too cheap to give you two full mushrooms.

Best Sushi in Shelby, service was great as well. Salmon delight is outstanding, I will absolutely be back, and highly recommend to anyone who is a sushi fan. I eat at a lot of Sushi restaurants up and down the east coast, and Sumo has some of the more creative rolls I’ve seen, and they taste great.

I’ve been here twice so far, and so far so good. One trip was easily a 5 star trip while the other was a 3 star trip, so I’m going with 4 currently. The sushi, both times, was fantastic. The wait staff was very helpful most of the time, although there were one or two items they had to check and see what they were(they didn’t know, either). The presentation and building is nice. My biggest problem is that I got something I really liked(a sushi bento box) the first time during lunch and then when I went back for dinner, they wouldn’t serve it. I could understand if it were a cheaper menu item but it wasn’t and there is nothing else comparable on the menu(there’s no lunch sushi bento and dinner sushi bento). So I ended up ordering a less expensive menu item which was still good, but ultimately made them less money. I do plan on going back, but only for lunch!
