Tanner’s Bar & Grill

I’ve gone to this Tanners on multiple occasions and every single time, the employees are rude. In general, Tanners is a great bar & grill, but not this one. Take your business somewhere else.

Cold beer but just mediocre waitress. Didn’t eat anything but had hard time getting hockey game on for us. Oh well… beer was cold.

The KC Strip plate is really the star of the show. For $ 12, you can get a decent cut of beef with a salad, potato and garlic bread. For the price, you’d expect a mediocre meal, but I ordered the strip to be medium and it was very tender & zesty.

This review is based on a one time visit for a single reason… their Thursday evening steak special. How can you beat a 16oz KC strip steak (or 8oz filet) for $ 12.95? Even as packed as they were, the service was prompt and… the steak was cooked perfectly.

I want to like Tanner’s, I really do. They’re close to my home, and there’s not much else in western Shawnee to choose from. The problem is that I feel like they’re the only game out that way and don’t really try to be better.
First, I will say that I usually sit at the bar and every time I’ve done so, the staff has been very nice. I was even in on the Royals parade day, and it was just as other reviewers described. They were in the weeds… and I mean DEEP. I felt so bad I started bussing some tables. The bartender was busting her tail from what I saw, and even asked me to stop, but come on, when you’re that far under-​staffed, let me throw away some tissue paper and old food and stack your baskets.
The food is standard bar fare. My biggest complaint is Thursday, i.e. «Steak Night.» $ 11.99 gets you either a filet or a strip. At that price, it’s not going to be Capital Grille. I know. However, I’ve been twice and both times medium came out well done, and what wasn’t gristle, was so tough I thought about using it to resole my shoes. I understand it’s a bar, but the special shouldn’t be that close to inedible. Do yourself a favor and just get a burger, even if you went for the steak.
Appearance: The bar looks like every other Tanner’s, except it’s never picked up. I’ve been in the afternoon on a dead day, I was there for the Royals celebration, I’ve been at night. Every time tables are in dire need of getting bussed and the carpeted floor is covered in crumbs, used napkins and spilled dressing. I can understand a bit when it’s slammed, but on a dead afternoon? The servers need to be better or they need to hire a bus boy, or maybe have the hostess do it. I’d rather seat myself to clean table than be told to seat myself and have to try to find a table that’s been wiped down in the last hour.
If they’d keep the place a lot more clean, add a buck to the steak night special if it means higher quality meat and juice a few lemons and limes for fresh cocktails the place would be great. Until then, they’ll be acceptable to get a bottle of beer if you’re close.

Today is the Royal’s celebration. Perhaps the busiest lunch period of the year for KC bars. This is a large popular place. Today there was 1 bartender, and maybe 3 waitresses. They were all working as fast as they could. The genius who runs this place did not add staff. Tables not bussed for 40 minutes. Desert orders over 30 minutes to get. Food and drink orders delayed. The owner clearly has no respect for his hard working employees or his repeat customers. Stay away unless you plan on moving in.

Not bad, not great. Food is so-​so bar food. Service at the bar is attentive, however table service is spotty. Went in one Saturday night to find many uncleared tables, despite not being that busy. They could be better, just need to work on the table service.

The atmospheres here at Tanners is really fun and creative, decorated in the «whole bunch of crazy crap on the walls» concept– but with lots of large screen televisions and a sports theme.

Really divey, dark feel to the place. Not a whole lot of options for late drinks besides it in the nearby area otherwise would try some place else.

It totally amazes me that this place stays busy. I guess it is all on the Tanners name.
Have been here several times and the service has always been horrible — I’ve never felt like I was bothering someone so much to walk into their establishment before.
Food at this location has never measured up to any of the others I’ve gone to.
Bad service and below mediocre (?) food — yet they keep busy… It’s got to be the location with little other options —

Decent food. Horrible horrible service. I ordered my food, it was wrong so I asked the waitress to redo it. No problem she was nice and all. When it came out wrong again I was getting hungry and upset. Said forget it. And told her I didn’t want it. She started getting mad. When the check came she charged me for the food (even though I didn’t eat it) and drinks (didn’t even discount one of them from our whole table). I asked her and she said her manager wouldn’t let her discount anything since she left my bad food on the table and didn’t take it back. So I left her only a 10% tip (I usually leave 20 – 25) and she got upset and confronted me about it. I got so pissed I almost took the 10% back. I will not return.

It’s pretty much a no brainer this place has 2 stars or less. The food is okay as far as bar food goes. The service was mediocre at best. We sat at a table for about 10 minutes while waitresses cleaned tables and helped other guests. We moved to the bar to actually get service. Sad when making money is based off tips and the fact that a waitress looks right at you and STILL doesn’t come to the table is very disappointing.
The gal behind the bar was pleasant and very attentive. Kudos for her doing what she’s supposed to.
I would say, go at your own risk. However, prepare to wait… even when it’s not busy.

Tanner’s is your average bar and grill, serving decent food in a casual atmosphere. However, their wait staff seems to be a little incompetent, not knowing specials or taking quite a lot of time to even take an order since it’s first come, first served on seating. Tonight was an especially bad night. Having arrived at10:30 to get a late night bite to eat and watch the end of the thunder game, we waited 10 min before a server could attend to us. When we finally did see a server we were then told that the kitchen was closed. We found this very odd, but left anyway without ordering anything. I called back 5 min later to find out that their kitchen was still open, but I guess our waitress didn’t feel like working. Needless to say, I can’t see us returning any time soon

Seemingly average neighborhood sports bar. Waitress had no clue what beer or drink specials were. Food was standard bar fare, only they clearly rely exclusively on frozen ingredients. Wings were below average and lacked flavor. The boneless wings slathered in the sweet chili sauce were tolerable. Sliders again lacked flavor and any additional toppings above cheese and a pickle. The French fries that accompanied the sliders were the only well-​seasoned item, though they were far from fresh. I’d go back to watch a game, but that’s about it.

Fairly decent food. I’ve been here a couple of times now. Service is always very good and fast. There are a lot of TVs if you want to catch a game.

Average. Nothing special.

Well we’ve since returned to this location for a Friday night dinner and they seem to have redeemed themselves. The food we’ve had so far has been good (except for that one time we couldn’t get any) and I’ve become quite the fan of those loaded fries. The part of me that tries to eat healthy doesn’t want to know any part of what they’re loaded with!
Because of that one supremely bad experience, I don’t walk out lightly, the best I can do is 3 stars. Had that never happened, you’d be looking at a solid 4.

It doesn’t surprise me that the reviews for this Tanner’s range from 2 to 4 stars. It’s a favorite hangout for some of our friends, so we end up here more frequently than I would like.
For the most part, I think the food is ok, especially if you are craving a burger or chicken strips. There’s usually a pretty decent drink special too. The staff is somewhat inconsistent, but most of the servers do well enough.
If you are looking for decent food and a TV to watch a big game, this is a pretty good location. It’s especially good for KU fans who enjoy nachos. You can’t go wrong with Jayhawks or the nachos.

I am a fan of Tanner’s all around, because, let’s face it, they are a KU bar. Enough said… well not really.
I chose this particular location for my going away party. It was packed when everyone got there around 8:30 on a Saturday night. There were no spots for anyone, so I was a little frightened that my party would be ruined. However, the server said she would clean up some tables in the back room right away. She even did it herself, which I find absolutely amazing. We got our table for around twenty people in about 15 minutes. The server we had was awesome, she wasn’t one of those frazzled snotty types either. Every couple minutes, there she was, alert and ready to serve us more and more alcohol, as much as we could afford I guess.
Anyway, the party was great, the server was great, and I ordered food which was bar food. But it’s a bar. They serve bar food at bars. Hello.

I went to Tanner’s last night and let me tell you, they won’t care if this review is bad because they were packed.
The typical Tanner’s customer will not care if the food is mediocre and the waitstaff is slow. As long as there is a big enough place with lots of tvs and beers, then they will come. It seems like Tanners is the local hangout spot for single, middle age people to come watch a game, hang out with buddies, or try and meet someone. There’s nothing wrong with that at all. With that being said, as far as hangout spots go, I prefer ones with good food.
