SCAMALERT! I went to Dmitri to have a cabinet built for my work van to hold some shelving. He wanted 50% down before drawing up a plan for me to approve. He insisted it be cash, no credit or debit. He said he would have no problem accepting debit or credit for the final balance, but the deposit has to be cash. He said the reason was because he would have to pay an extra 2 or 3% for fees. Well, which is it, 2 or 3? I offered to pay the extra 2−3% if he would accept debit or credit, he then said I could drive back tomorrow with a check and once it cleared he would start the project. Dmitri had many excuses as to why he accepts credit cards under some circumstances, but not in cases of deposits. It’s obvious to me that the reason is because once he has the deposit, he then has no motivation to start on my project and I have no recourse. This is very common in the industry and others like it. The only people that refuse to accept credit cards when they are equipped to take them are people that are trying to avoid charge-backs. The only people who worry about charge-backs are those that have a lot of charge-backs, those that have alot usually have alot because they do bad business and people have to charge-back to get their money back when projects do not get completed. Rule number one in hiring anyone for anything, NEVER pay anyone in cash, especially when they insist on it. It’s even a violation of the contract Dmitri has with his credit card processor. You cannot pick and choose when to honor your contract with the credit card company and then think customers will trust you. Stay far away!!!
