We used Vertical construction for 2 projects. the fist one went well; but was overpriced. They came recommended by a painting company we used so we thought as long as the quality was there the price may have been justified. The second experience we had with them put an end to all doubts; they are a bad company to work with and you should stay away at all costs. We were having a closet system installed in our walk-in and decided to have a pocket door installed to replace the swinging door. Their quote was about double that of other contractors($ 3,500) but we made the mistake of equating quality with cost. The door install itself was uneventful, but the problems started when they delivered an unpainted door with un-filled nail holes as «complete». When I pointed out that an unpainted door didn’t meet my definition of complete, the contractor hemmed and hawed until finally agreeing to paint the door with me supplying the paint. For full disclosure, we had painters coming the following weekend to paint the walls of the bathroom and closet; for some reason Steve(the owner and scheduler) took that to mean, the painters were going to do Vertical Construction’s job for them. It could have ended there, except Steve felt the need to write my wife a nasty email mail demanding that we pay the contractor cash, illegally and under the table, because we «guilted» him into painting the door. He also went on to say that the contractor would not get paid otherwise. A couple days later the contractor painted the door, sealed the surrounding trim and cut a notch in the pocket door for the latch hardware. He also tore a section of trim off another part of the walk-in to make up for gaps in the existing trim to the new pocket-door; claiming that the closet system would cover the baseboard trim. Surprise, surprise; he was wrong. He also said he would return in a couple days after the paint dried to install the door latch. Fast-forward to the closet system install. The closet system is installed and a huge chunk of exposed wall where the piece of trim was removed remains exposed. Additionally the contractor damaged a piece of neighboring trim, but now it’s secured by the closet insert and can no longer be removed or repaired, but is still visible. We called Vertical Construction to see about getting a piece of replacement trim for the missing section they removed and the response we got was; we don’t supply trim, that’s your responsibility. When asked about getting the door hardware installed they told us; we spent extra time painting your door so we are not going to supply you with a $ 20 latch, even though it was part of the original agreement. Stay away from this company, we certainly will moving forward.
