*sigh* I miss the Vogue. I know this is supposed to be its substitute, but it isn’t. I kind ov feel like I’m at a high skool dance when I’m there, versus the seedy creepiness that I loved about the Vogue. It seems like, come sunrise, school children are going to flood the room for gym class. And(am I getting old or what?), I’m sorry, fetish stuff is boring– borderline laughable at best. I don’t think it’s hot to see an old guy wrapping a hot chick up like a mummy, nor to see an old guy getting whipped by a transvestite, I just don’t(that makes me a freak, doesn’t it). I’d rather hear more music and see less theatrics. And the cost to get in! Are you kidding? $ 10/person when there’s maybe 20 people inside. So it’s official– I’m a jaded scenester crawling towards middle-agedom, so what. I’ll still keep going, tho, cuz it’s one ov 3 clubs in the scene. I just had hoped for more when I was in high school, dancing in front ov the mirror hoping for a cool club to go to when I grew up.

The Blacklight is Seattle’s newest alternative nightclub. Catering to those of the the goth persuasion, Friday’s bring us Fetish Night featuring Paul Aleinikoff of C89.5’s «On the Edge» and the newly formed fetish troupe«Plan B». I went to the grand opening of the Blacklight last night, and I have to tell you, I had a great time! I went alone, and while for some that sounds like a loser plan, I probably danced more than I normally do when I go out with my husband when all we do is sit around drinking and looking cool and hitting the dance floor only occasionally. For the grand opening, they had two dj’s, Aleinikoff and some other guy I can’t remember. I suppose it’s a good thing I can’t remember the other guy, because honestly he sucked, and I would definitely avoid going where he was spinning in the future. Sorry dude, but it’s fetish night at a goth club and you’re playing some remixes of lame ass 90’s dance music? Some of my friends actually left at that point, heading down the street to the good ‘olé standby, the Mercury. The Blacklight is the Vogue’s replacement. As I was driving around looking for parking last night I drove by the old Vogue, it was sad to see the big old«For Sale» sign on the front door. But the clubs owners really out-did themselves with the Blacklight. The size is probably similar to that of the old Vogue, but the set-up is much more open. You walk in the lighted entryway outside, right to the front counter where you pay your cover(last night it was $ 5, or $ 10 if you’re not in fetish attire). From there, you can see pretty much the whole club. The platform with the pole, the main stage with the screen behind it(they were playing«Serenity» last night), and the bar. There are a fair amount of tables tucked in the back corner, though last night it seemed seating was scarce it is probably comparable to what we had at the old Vogue. Aside from tables, there are numerous seats around the edge of the dance floor. Even with so many people there, the dance floor was still large enough to hold lots of people dancing around without bumping into everybody. Since last night was the grand opening, the place was packed thus the line at the bar was HUGE! I didn’t get anything from the bar last night, instead partaking in the refreshing iced water they provide free of charge. However, with the huge line-up at the door, there was severe congestion towards the front of the club, near the entrance. While there are other ways to exit, I could see this massive congestion as a potential hazard should the need arise that the club needs to be evacuated. Because the Blacklight is located in the Capitol Hill Arts Center, they can’t open until 10pm. Which is fine, I rarely make it anywhere before that anyway. They are open only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Saturday night will be «Time Warp» with DJ Evan Blackstone — he also spun Sat. nights at the old Vogue, and Sunday nights are going to be «Bizarre Love Sunday» with DJ Trent Von, who’s spun practically everywhere in this city. If you’re looking for a fun out with friends, I would definitely say go to the Blacklight.
