Great gallery for young local artists in the Prefontaine Building. Be sure to stop by here on First Thursdays!

SOIL rocks. The art world is a world of creative destruction, or destructive creation. New artists make things built upon layers of things before. At once rejecting and honoring, or, if you will, sampling. I’ve seen many SOIL shows and have some SOIL artists. Lately they have gathered UW artists and that is good. This a great art collector spot for work of schooled artists. Do your research. It’s a must see Seattle spot for seeing new contemporary art selected with a practiced eye.

Today is first Thursday, and one again the only gallery I could drag myself to was SOIL, off of 3rd ave between Preventing and Washington street in Pioneer Square. This place has got a strange magic for me. Last month it was Xanadu, and this month it is Beaker. Test tubes and crystals, the weird sharp smell coming from the display case added to the sense of being inside someones laboratory, where they mix and match crystals and old photos. Toiletries and mystery bottles filled suspect powders and things that sparkle in my mind. I really make the special trip to stop by their. They really make my heart race.

I haven’t visited Soil at their new location yet, but I frequently dropped in the old capitol hill one while walking by and they almost always had something interesting and innovative. They’re a nonprofit collective of local artists who wanted to show things which were often considered too weird/challenging for other galleries. I’m sure the new space in pioneer square is equally worth a visit. Admission is free.
