They seem to have worked out a lot of the kinks since Ema’s review last week. I tried this place today, and got a taco plate with the carne asada and the carnitas. The wait was pretty short. It wasn’t a lot of food: a generous pile of beans, some rice in the corner, and two rather gaunt-looking tacos.(Yes, tacos can look gaunt.) But this is a college campus, and the plate cost a little less than a full-sized taco combo and Mi Charrito, so I can forgive the portions.(That said, both my tacos put together were still probably smaller than one from Charrito). Now, the good news. The cheese appeared to be Cojita, and not some shredded mozzarella/cheddar travesty. The meats in the tacos were of the right species. The lime wedges were present and accounted for. Oh, the guy after me in line ordered vegan pseudosausage tacos, and they asked him whether he wanted cheese rather than just piling it on. The beans were decent — nice splash of lime, good texture. The rice was a little dry, but fine. The tortillas were kind of halfway between hard shells and soft tortillas — I’m not sure which they were intended to be. Only a single tortilla per taco, though, so by the time I finished the second one, it had gotten soggy and lost structural integrity. Both meats seemed possibly overcooked — the carne asada was close to what Chipotle calls barbacoa, and the carnitas were mushy. But hey, better overcooked than undercooked. They also had some interesting sides, like watermelon and jicama spears, and spicy tater tots with sour cream.

There could be a lot of improvements on the food served at the UW. And that is an understatement. Cojita cheese: It is NOT mozzarella and cheddar! The menu says that the tacos come topped with cojita cheese. They actually use mozzarella and cheddar shreds. DOOD, SRSRLY?! Meats: I ordered chicken and steak. I got two steak tacos. Limes: The menu also says you get a lime with your taco plate, which I was really excited for, because I love lime with my tacos. FAIL: No lime with my tacos. Special requests: I asked for no cheese, and I got cheese. Overall review: FAIL. I’d give the place zero stars but Unilocal won’t let me. Wait Time: Also. It took 40 minutes total(standing in line to ordering my food to waiting for it to getting my name called). That seriously needs to improve because 40 minutes to get my lunch is a bit excessive in my book when you need to grab lunch between classes. P. S.NOCA$H. Husky card, Visa/MC only. P. P. S. Just a little tip HFS workers… vegan tacos mean you don’t put cheese on it!(My head is going to explode now.)
