Gerrard (Gerod) Floyd was a god send. Originally I contacted him about a siding project. I ended up talking with him about the variety of other things I was considering doing on my house and he indicated each of which his company could handle (they build houses as well as do major remodeling so he has a significant talent pool to draw from).
I have no doubt he’d have preferred to be the general contractor for my original more expansive (and more expensive) project. Ultimately I decided to scale back my project list to conserve my monetary resources.
YET, he still continued to help me. Offering suggestions to improve the project and connecting me with a couple specialists that I could hire directly. His only benefit (other than I am sure enhancing the good will between him and those subcontractors he recommended) was helping out a guy trying to get a lot done for a small budget. Sincere altruism.
I might add, the original quote (s) he provided on the total project were in line with what other firms had given me, and where what I’d consider reasonable when adding an additional level of project management.
By assuming the role of general contractor myself I saved the equivalent of Gerrard’s profit margin BUT added to my risks and responsibilities. If you aren’t up for some major headaches hiring a general contractor is a good idea. Even if though it will cost a bit more you should probably do it.
Would I hire him? YES!
If I’d have had the budget, or not had the time, I would have hired him this time. Most definitely!

The only thing keeping me from giving him a «5» is not having the direct experience of having him work on my projects. (though his recommended people have done a great job, which implies the quality of the work he’d provide would also be excellent — and with his layer of management things might run a lot smoother.)

I didn’t hire this contractor because I felt pressured and hustled while I was trying to exact a quote on his work. Also, he kept trying to tell me what I needed to do (in lieu of suggestions) and how my choice of desired siding was «UGLY». Umm… isn’t that for me to decide??? Furhtermore, I was watching him as he measured the house’s exterior and he added on an additional 2 feet to his labor costs!!! Like I wouldn’t notice!!! Ugh!
Definitely a ‘must not’!
