A Nature lovers inappropriate Darwin, Alfred Wallace, and Barbara McClintock fueled dream. The coolest damn bookstore of Natural History of Plants and Animals in the world??? Certainly one of the most impressive in this country. The VAST majority of major cities do not have such a specialty bookstore. Every biologist that I have ever taken there is impressed.
If you are a nature lover or want to plant a garden to attract butterflies, birds, or grow native plants, check them out. If you are traveling overseas and are in need of field guides of the biota, this is the place to go.
Staff is INSANELY knowledgeable about most areas of biology with a large dollop of speciality knowledge. Particular strengths include birds and PNW plants. As a PhD student in Biology, I would have serious doubts that I would be qualified to work there.
Ask them an obscure question about biology and they can direct you to a book that will address it or they can answer it for you.
It’s a small store with a great collection of books from all over the world. The store is located slightly below street level and can be kind of hard to see from the street.
And yeah, I’ve been known to have a few inappropriate thoughts about Barbara McClintock and jumping genes. Good times.
