Delta Dental Washington Dental Service

Website says customer service is available 7am-​5pm PST Monday through Friday. Called on Friday at 3:20pm and after spending an infuriating 15 minutes in IVR hell I waited while the system asked me the same irrelevant question four times before it said ‘transferring’. Then a message played saying customer service hours were 7am-​4pm Mon-​Thur and 7am-​12pm Friday. I have no issues with my companies group benefits but Delta Dental service is the worst.

Scam. Don’t encourage this kind of buffoonery.
Outdated info and no integrity.
Want to fight w your coverage? Too bad. The rest of us don’t want to have to deal with places like these who make it hard on consumers to get what they need.

This is an individual (not group) dental policy I purchased direct from Delta Dental. I carefully researched who accepted our dentists and had a good reputation… apparently old information. This is a sucky policy that doesn’t pay much at all. If you happen to acquire employer insurance along the way this policy is a worthless waste of money as they do NOT co-​ordinate benefits. Their individual policies are primary only and will NOT pick up residual co-​pays or other unpaid charges from your primary. If you find yourself in this situation, you are basically paying for two insurance policies and getting only one.
Upon purchase I was under the impression this policy paid out more, and would improve after we had been covered for a year. Not true. Don’t take their salesman word for it, read the fine print. The nice column down the side of the benefits chart is not what THEY pay (as you might think) it’s what YOU pay ($ 550 for a root canal, $ 825 for a crown, $ 65 for a basic exam, etc). In addition there are severe limitations as to what and how many procedures they will cover in a year, or seven… again, not much.
Far as I can tell, their main contribution is to negotiate with their in-​system dentists for a lower rate for their customers… which the customers pay instead of Delta. I could probably have negotiated myself and saved alot of wasted premium dollars. And since the policy is written on a one year contract, they can only be cancelled once a year on the anniversary date.
Even the dentist offices I asked for references 18 months ago are now rolling their eyes at the payment delays and poor policies now offered by Delta. Maybe they used to be a good insurance, but no longer. I will be cancelling on my renewal date this year (sooner if possible).
Not recommended. Save your money to apply towards your dental bill, it’s cheaper than this policy.

I really have trouble getting through their miserable phone tree to a person. A review here seems sort of pointless, as who else is there? I’m writing this in hopes that someone there sees it, as they don’t have a feedback mechanism (that I could find) on their site.
The reason I was calling was because they’ve taken my money but not sent me any insurance cards or information via the mail. You’d think that’d be an easy thing to remedy, right? Nope. Not if you’re stuck using their phone tree. It hangs up on you after three invalid entries, like if you try «0» in merciful hope of an actual human.

I work in a dental office in Washington State. For the most part I don’t have a lot of issues with WDS and they seem to have decent coverage (Although there are a few pretty cheap plans that do not offer very much and you may be better just paying out of pocket.) It’s semi easy to get a real person on the phone who actually knows what they are doing. I do have a few gripes. Customer service is open 8 am to 4 pm. And Don’t EVER consider going out of network with them. They will RAPE you on fees.

This insurance company is my secondary insurer and I was really confused about how payments from them towards some dental work I was having done were going to work so I gave their Seattle office a call. Not only did I not sit on hold for forever, I got to talk to a real person who answered every question from my lloonngg list fully and politely. She even let me run some hypothetical «this could potentially happen in 6 months» questions by her without getting (outwardly) annoyed.
Also they cover sealants in adults which is awesome.
