Crown Hill Hardware

Went out of my way to find this place and then was told he cant make a key because the door is too old? While there noticed the place is really messy and seemed dusty.
No way id go back.

I’m not sure how they stay afloat. The aisles are cluttered and disorganized. Things are hard to find, shelves are dusty; the storefront itself is pretty rough too. Weeds are taking over. (don’t they sell Roundup? and weedeaters?) It’s close to home, but I’d rather go to a bigger store that’s got better hours and a better selection of products.

Handy location since I’m 3 blocks away BUT… poor quality merchandise, higher prices than other neighborhood stores in the area. Their re-​screening is OK but I found another ACE hardware on Greenwood doing it just as well and cheaper… and faster. The last straw was when I walked in and they refused to take a card for a small purchase. I didn’t have cash on me at the time and I couldn’t get what I needed. SO, I walked 3 blocks further to Morgan’s just North of there and they had what I needed AND took my card for the purchase. I will not return here unless they are the only option open. PLUS, if you own this business you might just want to spend some time cleaning up your shelves and the floor. The place is an absolute disaster area.

Great locally owned hardware store. Call in advance to make sure they have what you want, as selection is smaller than the big box stores — but great prices, and on the spot glass cutting. They also make screens with a faster turn around than most of the other hardware stores.

A fantastic old school hardware store experience. Right out of Mayberry RFD. Such nice people to work with. They do a great job re-​screening our windows and doors. Extremely convenient location and easy parking. Highly recommend.

Five star purchase experience from start to finish. I called to ask if they did custom window screens and asked about probable cost. Since the answers were all a go, I came in with my dimensions, customized my screen for frame color, mesh, etc. and left. Later THE SAME afternoon I got a call that they were ready so I picked them up to find that they had collected all the hardware I needed to install them and had it ready for me too. Good prices, quick service and I get to feel good about buying local. It all works.

Every year I try to spend money and am thwarted due to these factors:
* poor lighting and very dirty
* war torn isles with various rubble lining the walkways
* basic items out of stock
* unorganized shelves
I really want to spend money here. I want this place spruced up and to be a thriving part of the community like it’s Phinney sister-​store.
I’m not asking for Espresso and a Personal Shopping Assistant. I’m asking for the very basics that qualify one to refer to their store as a «hardware store» and not «creepy uncle bill’s backyard shed».
We can do better Crown Hill Hardware! See you in 11 months, 30 days.

Very helpful knowledgeable people. They seem to have most anything I need for my older Ballard house. It’s not a large store but I’ve seldom been there and gotten skunked!

Sure more selection would help… but they don’t have Home Depot’s 20,000 sq ft of retail space. I found most everything I needed during my several trips and honestly thought the prices were very fair. It also had a wonderful nostalgic feel, as they sell random candy bars at the cash register for $ 1.00.
If you need basic hardware supplies you’ll find all you need without the chaos of Fred Meyer or poor service of Home Depot.

Incredible same day glass repair — they re glazed my wood window in 2 hrs flat and charged an extremely fair price while doing great work.
I might be just 3 blocks away, but wow they have the old time skills you need without an exorbitant price.

It’s a nice little store with a little bit of this and that. I’m three blocks away, so occasionally I’ll walk over and see if they might have what I need. But it’s kind of a crapshoot, so most of the time I save myself a trip and just drive down to Stoneway because I KNOW they will have what I’m looking for.
Friendly staff, with what seems like fair prices. I have nothing negative to say really other than don’t expect them to have exactly what you’re looking for. And what they do have is usually limited to one or two of that particular item hanging on the pegboards. Nice little store though. Three stars = «A-​OK» rating on Unilocal

I really want to like this place but they make it hard to do. For starters their hours are not exactly convenient if you have a day job. When they are open the place seemed pretty cluttered and dingy. Both times I went in they didn’t have most of what I was looking for and the items they did have we’re priced higher than Stoneway or Greenwood hardware. Finally, the staff seemed to vary in attitude from downright indifferent to mildly surly.
A lot of people who rate this place so highly seem to only compare them to the big box stores. By that standard I guess this place would be good. However compared to Stoneway or Greenwood this place is terrible. I’m all for supporting local businesses but only when they’re actually worth supporting.

These fellers will do you right. I, and the inlaws made several trips to CHH to buy roofing supplies while doing a shed.
‘Nice bulk nails and screws by the pound. Store is not .5 miles end to end.
Buy local.

There are a few places in Seattle that are guarded jealously as the real deal. This is one of those places. We use them to rescreen the doors and windows at our apartment building. As a landlord, having access to cheap, quality door and window rescreening is essential. They also fabricate custom screens. Whenever I go in there it looks like they’re in a going out of business sale, but they really do have a wide variety of things, only you’ll only find a couple kinds of hammer for example instead of the 10 foot aisle of hammers at the big box stores. They’re a little lacking in the marketing department, but they know their stuff.

I do love this store.
1. The staff are always very courteous and helpful.
2. For a neighborhood store, they do keep a good range of stock.
3. They’re a neighborhood store! A short jaunt up the block beats a drive to one of the caverns on Aurora.

OH MY GAWD I LOVE THIS PLACE! They have everything that you’d ever want.
I have been going to different stores all over Seattle looking for a washboard (for a music project), and for-​the-​life-​of-​me I couldn’t find one. Nowhere. No how! I mean it!
Driving down 15^th Avenue, I saw this place & pulled over into their parking lot. The cutie boy came out from behind the counter asked me if I needed help (I know I look lost… or dumb… or both). And, I told him that I was needing a washboard. He perked up & said, «Yes! We have one!»
I was so frickin happy, I could have jumped over the counter & hugged him, but I knew that would have freaked him out.
But, I could see they were pretty well-​equipped with hardware stuff.
I highly recommend checking them out, if you want to find what you need (in terms of hardware). I think I bought the last washboard though. :) Ha ha! So there!

Back in the day I use to feel that all that mattered when it came to purchasing something was the price. Regardless of service level, location, or inconvenience — I’d buy something at a place just to save myself a few bucks, or to save on shipping, or because I knew it was the cheapest place around. So I guess I can say that I’m one of the reasons why big box stores or online retailers succeed the way they do.
I feel differently now. Price is still important to me but I place quality of service almost on par with price. Nothing feels better than supporting a retailer who has truly helped you come to a decision on a product or knowing that you are talking with a subject matter expert on whatever you need to buy.
All that being said… I love Crown Hill Hardware. It’s a small hardware store and as others have said, they don’t always have everything you need — BUT they ALWAYS greet you when you walk in the door and they always do their best to help fix whatever issue you might be having.
I went in there a few months back to find a small plastic PVC piece to fix one of my sprinkler lines. The item I bought from them was about 75 cents. On a later trip to Home Depot the same item was about 55 or 60 cents. So the big box store is obviously cheaper — but at what cost? It took me a good 5 min of trying to flag down an orange vest, then time finding the aisle provided the info from the vest was correct, then had to sort through boxes of items that had the incorrect piece in there. When I bought the item from Crown Hill Hardware, I was in and out in just a few minutes after talking w/​the clerk who knew exactly what piece I needed and exactly where it was.
To me… working with someone who knows what they are talking about it is definitely worth a few extra pennies. Plus– you get to support local shops. Win/​Win situation!

Well, I’m a supporter because it’s a local shop and the guys here are more than EAGER to help…
Their inventory sometimes is a little lacking– but they ARE the little guy. They don’t have much room to pack it in– but, they’ll always order something for you if you’d like. I come here for work often and am always glad when they have what I’m looking for, because– I dunno– I have an aversion to shopping in airplane hangars where you could live for days on end and nobody would even notice.
However, I’ve always been tempted to make a HD run just for that taco wagon…

One star, because they still haven’t changed their sign from «Anxious to rescreen for you» to «EAGER to rescreen for you.» Gee, who knew rescreening made them so uneasy? Plus, their readerboard has said that for almost two years. I guess the only thing they want to do is rescreen.
But in all seriousness, the selection here is paltry. I do a lot of remodeling, and although I love supporting local businesses, these guys hardly stock their shelves. I don’t know if that points to a deeper problem (lack of capital to order product?) or just sheer indifference. The customer service is lacking too.
I’m not sure what this place is good for, because I’ve come here looking for odds & ends that I forgot to pick up at Lowes or Fred Meyer, and came home empty handed. If you need plumbing or electric supplies and don’t want to trek to Bitter Lake, seriously– go to Morgans, a block away.
EDIT: I gave them one more star because they changed their readerboard to something about box fans. yaaaaay.

A hole in the wall hardware store. Very convenient to us Crown Hill/​Loyal Heights residents (and there aren’t any other options near by, unfortunately).
They don’t have a big selection and are missing some items (couldn’t find some plumbing supplies one day) but they do carry all sorts of odds and ends and have a huge selection of nuts and bolts and are really good for carrying the little things that you forgot on your hardware store run to the big guys.
