Brentwood Square Apartments

A-​OK.
The complex is very old and desperately needs updating for each unit. They have a few select units that are updated to modern standards (i.e. granite countertops, etc), but the rest of the units are old.
I hate the carpet.
I’ve been living in my unit for 3 years and they have yet to install brand new carpet for us.
The old carpet is what makes our apartment have an unpleasant thick musty old smell.
The washer/​dryer in the laundry room down the hall are CRAP. They don’t wash the clothes very well. My daughter’s socks that had dirt & mud stains, that would easily wash off by hand, did not wash off in these machines. It pretty much eats up my $ 1.50/load every time. But I have no choice. I have to do laundry.
What makes it hard to leave though is the rent is so much cheaper than all the other apartments I have seen. Also, I do like the management. They seem very involved and present during business hours. They know about the little things that go on in the complex, and immediately will address it in some form or another. They are nice, communicative, and professional.
About FedEx & USPS packages, I learned not to have it ship to my apt. Simply because I had a bad experience 2 years ago when a tenant took my pkg confirming to the leasing agent that that package is indeed hers when it was not. She did not return my package until a week or 2 later, claiming she didn’t realize the address label had the wrong unit #. SUUUUUURE.
All of the other reviews I have read for other apartments in Shoreline had terrible reviews about the management. Rudeness, neglect, denial, lies, etc. For that, I am very thankful for our management here at Brentwood because they are not like that at all. Even the maintenance team is very friendly.

They imposed a really horrible non-​smoking rule in the middle of our lease without us agreeing to it. The neighbors are really loud and the walls are paper thin. There is always construction going on. Our packages get left in very odd places. There is a nursing home kind of hospice place where people seem to end up dieing every night, so there are always flashing lights and sirens. The Aurora bums flood over from the nearby park and sleep in the bus stops that are in front of the buildings. We scratch the bottom of our car every time we go into the parking lot. The closets break every time they fix them. The heaters are in odd positions, and the cable outlet is limited to just the living room on a very bad wall. The neighbors are very shady. We lived here for over a year.

I’ve had a pretty decent experience living here. My biggest complaint — which is huge, but not the fault of the complex — is that it’s very far from «civilization.» What I mean by this is it’s impossible to really feel like you’re in the city; you can’t walk to a café or a bar (there actually aren’t really any around, period) and it’s largely a residential area. Another issue was that for a two-​bedroom apartment, we were given one parking space and put on a waiting list for a second one. Although we were told it would come pretty quickly, it actually took a few months — and there is really no extra parking to speak of (about four guest spots, no street parking).
Otherwise, our apartment was great. Spacious, W/​D in unit, dishwasher, (most) utilities included in the (pretty cheap) rent, quiet, good storage, etc. I’m moving out because I feel too far from the rest of my life, but if it weren’t almost in Shoreline I would definitely stick around.
