Several years ago Carolyn Pilastro, DESIGNorigins, and her team worked on the ‘living ’ spaces in our home-​kitchen, family room and powder room. These are the rooms we spend the most time in ourselves and with guests. Everyone that visits our home comments on how lovely it is, warm and inviting. When we were ready to finish our living and dining rooms –we knew just who to contact.
Carolyn visited with me to discuss how I envisioned using these rooms. This conversation included a discussion around what pieces we wanted to keep and what pieces we felt we were missing. Her attention to detail is striking. When we were starting the process she walked through the entire house. This aided in her understanding of the flow, how we lived and what our interests are.
My favorite example and story I tell everyone is that she was able to bring our love of the outdoors-​indoors. She noticed our affection for birds-​our bird baths, feeders, guides and binoculars. She incorporated this hobby into the living and dining rooms by bringing in some metal birds and a coffee table book by the Audubon Society. It is small details like this that endeared her and her team to us.
