The Bearded Barber

Decided to try out The Bearded Barber after reading all the great reviews on Unilocal,and I was not disappointed.
Made an appointment with Mitch, the owner, at 10am for a full haircut, beard trim, and shave. I had never received a professional shave before, so I thought I would give it a try.
Mitch did a great job asking me plenty questions to know exactly what I wanted, and also provided some very good suggestions which I appreciated. He gave me a great haircut then proceeded with the hot towel shave, which was very nice. I now know what everyone means when they say «you can’t beat a professional shave!».
Mitch was not rushing AT ALL, which means a lot as most barbers try to get you in and out as quick as possible to get more clients in. He was extremely professional and did a fantastic job; definitely exceeded my expectations. If you have never had a hot towel shave, I would say to give this place a try at least once to experience it.
I’m glad I found The Bearded Barber and will definitely be making future appointments with them!

This is the place to go.
I had a very particular look I was going for, and Mitch (barber/​owner) took great care to understand exactly what I wanted to make sure I’d be completely satisfied when I walked out the door. He did a perfect job… really couldn’t have been ANY better. Definitely stop in here if you have a beard. And if you don’t, stop in here anyway. You’ll be glad you did.

The Bearded Barber is a cool place to go if you want a fresh cut, shape up or your beard trimmed. The staff are funny and professional. Laid back atmosphere with complimentary beverages. I’ve been coming here for just about a year and Mike has been doing a great job cutting my hair and shaping my beard. The hot towel before a shave is the most relaxing part.
Appointments highly recommended. Like I said, the staff is professional, so they get booked quick.

After an extensive search for a place that trims beards and does haircuts, The Bearded Barber made the cut. After reading all positive reviews, I made my 20 – 25 minute drive. I got there early around 9:45am. Walk-​ins are allowed but with the four barbers there, no one was available until noon. I booked with Mike for noon. The place had an aftershave but welcoming smell. There were mini donuts, munchkins and cookies in front of the waiting area. A nice touch.
So, I arrived early at 12:40 and there was some confusion about my appt. Mike took me and we spoke what I wanted and what he suggested. I went with his recommendations, as he was the expert. I read in the reviews that the barbers are very talkative. Not so with Mike. I attempted a few times to jump start a conversation but they failed. Everything was going okay time wise and with the service until his next appt. or friend arrived. Mike decided to pay more attention to him and talk to him, than he did of me. He stopped numerous times. Very unprofessional. This is why the review is 3 stars. If it wasn’t for this, it would’ve been 4 – 5 stars. Also, both Mitch and Ryan gave their clients cards when they left. Mike gave me nothing. The beard/​mustache trim is nice but it wasn’t worth the aggravation. I will be back, but not with Mike. I will try Ryan or Mitch next time.
Update: I called Mitch, the owner, and told him what happened. He apologized a hundred times, thanked me for calling and told me my next cut/​trim was on the house and to pick up a gift certificate. When I arrived, he was outside and apologized again and went in to get my gift certificate. He even gave me his card with contact info. This update and increase in stars, was my decision and not influenced by Mitch. Just wanted everyone to know he takes his business seriously and don’t hesitate to patronize them. I hope to be a longtime customer moving forward.

I’ve been going to this barber shop for a few months now after switching from a big chain barber and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. The atmosphere is great. The guys are friendly and outgoing. I always have a few laughs to go along with my haircut and shave. The shop has a modern style with some great barber-​themed décor. The owner is always there and really works hard to make everyone enjoy their experience. There’s usually free baked goods for your wait.
The barbers themselves clearly have unique and great senses of style. I’ve seen guys come out with conservative (yet fashionable) and modern cuts. I personally have only had Nigel cut my hair. He’s phenomenal. He really listens to what I want, but also isn’t afraid to make suggestions on what he would do. They style your hair after the cut.
The shaves are great too. I recently got into wet shaving myself and had these guys do a few shaves for me so far and I’ve always been very happy with the result. The price for a haircut is $ 20 and for a cut and shave is $ 38. Pretty reasonable compared to what you’ll pay elsewhere, especially considering the great atmosphere. Just remember to bring cash!

Have been taking my three boys here for several months now. Very nice fun environment. The cuts are always exactly what we ask for and my boys love the experience! Mitch and Ryan do a great job!!!

These guys are great… shop has a «barbershop» feel as opposed to salon, and while I may have had better haircuts I’ve never had a better all around experience. Staff are all friendly, Nigel is the man. LOVE being able to go someplace to get my beard cleaned up, and looking forward to getting a hot-​steam shave when I’m ready to take it off altogether.
Really cool place — and while they’re cash only, they do have an ATM on-​site now.

I take my 2 year old son to The Bearded Barber and wouldn’t take him anywhere else!!! Everyone in the shop is wonderful!!! My son gets his haircut by Ryan and he is amazing!!! The best part about this place is you can make an appointment and they are always right on time!!!

Never in my life have I ever stepped foot into such American tradition with modern flare. The staff is humble, respectful and give a sense of warm welcome. I am taken back by how amazing they are with my little boy, not only does he come out looking like a distinguished gentlemen but are kind and patient in the process. I strongly recommend Ross, as he is who I had the pleasure of interacting with, but the other gentlemen also carry a similar disposition. Bottom line: great people, great haircuts, and at a price that is less then most places. The Bearded Barber belongs in Scotch Plains New Jersey.

Just back from my first visit after a great cut by Ross. I’ve avoided ‘barber shops’ for years, because I always felt out of place in a musty old man place. I’ve been thinking about coming here since they opened, but was concerned based on the photos they post on twitter/​instagram that it would be the opposite — too young and trendy for a fat suburban dad like myself. No worries. Ross was able to zero in on what I needed to do with my hair, and was just the right amount of talkative/​friendly.

What a great Barber Shop. Everyone is nice and friendly and they do a great job. It a fantastic atmosphere for both adults and kids. Being so good, they do get busy so appointments are recommended. Even if you don’t need a shave or a haircut, it just a good place to stop by and chat.

I love the barber shop feel and the barber shop conversation. The guys are all great and I always leave feeling like a valued customer. They’ve added a nice touch bringing in coffee, doughnuts and cookies today. Those things may not mean much to everyone but they do to me. I drive 45min to go and see Ryan. How many barber shops do you think I pass on the way there? Enough said. Thank you to Ryan, Mitch, and the guys for a great experience…

Comfortable, relaxed atmosphere and a great haircut. This is a fine new local business owned by local guys. Worth a try.

Let me start out by saying I have not gotten a professional haircut in close to 18 years. I either buzzed my head myself or had my buddy do it. This was absolutely fine because I always kept my haircuts short. When the Bearded Barber opened right down the street I was intrigued and wanted to try something different. I made the appointment for a haircut and shave with Ryan and was surprised at how well both were priced together ($ 35), considering I have gotten shaves before that were normally $ 45 without the haircut. I walked in and the barbershop was in immaculate condition. Everything was pristine and the décor was modern. Ryan and Mitch stay very close to the appt. time so Ryan was ready for me as soon as I walked in. He asked me the necessary questions so I received the exact haircut and shave I wanted. Ryan was very personable and we had a nice conversation throughout the haircut. During the shave I sat back and relaxed. They had many different layers to the shave with lotions and aftershave included. I could not have been happier with the results and will go back whenever I’m in need of a haircut. Of course I will always throw the shave in as well.

Just got back from «The Bearded Barber». Hair cut for our son. We said «Our son is non verbal.» Ryan’s response… «That doesn’t mean I can’t talk to him.» Priceless. Mitch (the owner) and Ryan have a great «man cave» going in Scotch Plains. Traditional, yet up to date. They are skilled, respectful, and patient. Regular clients we shall be. Ryan spent quality time making sure the hair cut was precise and stylish. This shop is a great asset to our community.
