I have lived here in Schertz for over 20 years and have never eaten at this establishment! That was a huge mistake. This place is AWESOME!!! Food and service A+++… I defiantly will be going back.

Breakfast ends at 11am. We showed up 18 minutes after. Oh well, I had the chicken fried steak and my wife had a burger. The lady who greets us told us B-Fast was over, almost like a warning or threat. Our waitress was also a little rude. It wasn’t the friendly, home town place we were expecting. Perhaps it would’ve been better«not-on-a-Saturday». The food was ok, I also had a cup of clam chowder. Overall, the food was ok. The service was sufficient and minimal. We did see another couple that was rude to our waitress, so maybe she was pissed about other people. We always try to be nice and kind.

Love the new location! Try the cinnamon rolls! My favorite plates have to be the BLT, fried fish, spaghetti, and chicken fried steak. Give this place a try if you’re looking for something good! They also have daily specials

This is the first time I come into this restaurant. Abels relocated to this new location about a year ago. Came in around 12:54pm and found the lunch crowd. It took us about 3 minutes to be seated and about another 4 – 5 min to for our order to be taken. Drinks came in pretty quick. I ordered the lunch special for Thursday — — Grilled Pork Chops with fried okra, my daughter had the catfish and my wife had the grilled chicken sandwich. The sweet tea was pretty good. Not too sweet and not too weak. Our waitress(Traci) was friendly and efficient and kept us updated on the status of our order. The food arrived about 28 minutes later. We really wanted to taste something different — — home cooking type of food. The food was pretty good. My family enjoyed their food. My food was just a lukewarm but it was ok. We’ll probably return again – especially for their breakfast menu. Some have told me it’s much better than their regular lunch/dinner menu.

Great diner: fresh food, fast, known for hefty cinnamon rolls, lunch was ten dollars and filling, suggest hitting breakfast and going to natural bridge caverns afterwards.

We ordered the catfish dinner, chicken fried steak and shrimp and steak. The catfish and chicken fried steak were both fine. I ordered my steak medium well. It looked like it was 5 secs away from being beef jerky. Should’ve sent it back, but just drowned it in A1. Ordered apple and pecan pies for dessert, both were very good. The rolls were ok. Needed more butter. Our waitress was very nice and friendly tho. If I went back, I wouldn’t order the steak again.

We highly recommend Abels. Excellent food, amount was generious. Our waitress was great. I had a bowl of the clam chowder it was huge. My husband and sister had the chicken fried steak they both had takeout boxes. My brother in law had steak and shrimp. Huge shrimp. If we ever come back to San Antonio will eat here again.

This place came with a glowing recommendation from someone else staying at the Stone Creek RV park nearby. The diner is easy to miss driving by on the I35 access road as its part of a retail plaza. The relatively small place was very busy on an early Sunday afternoon but we were seated in just a few minutes. The staff is friendly and attentive without being annoyingly so. Service is quick. I ordered the chicken fried chicken(a battered and fried chicken breast) and Lisa got the chicken fried steak(prepared like the chicken but with a chopped steak). Sides were mashed and gravy fo both and okra for her and corn for me. The meals also came with grilled and buttered Texas toast which was outstanding. The mains were a little bland but were easily kicked up with a sprinkle of salt. The potatoes were real and the corn was canned nibblets-style. The meats were lightly battered and fried to a light crisp. Again, a bit bland though. We started with clam chowder that was thick and filled with huge bits of clam. A wonderful starter. Overall though with so many other options in the area I’m not sure how pressed we’d be to come back repeatedly(which is what we do when we find a place we just love). Worth a try indeed, but unfortunately not necessarily a «can’t miss» stop.

Me and my wife stopped here on our way to Austin. My parents originally found this place and told us all about it. For context my parents live far on the South Side of San Antonio and they’ll often make the 30 – 40 min trip out here just to have breakfast. You can usually see the owner running around in the big cleché chef hat. The atmosphere of this place is a cozy country dinner just as they set out to be. I had the eggs benedict and my wife had the one egg breakfast. We both had coffee. Both the meals and the drinks were good. The eggs were poached perfectly with the whites cooked full through and the yolk runny as can be. The reason i like this place and the reason it gets the five stars is because of consistency and intimacy. While others might whine about the lack of «creativity» in the dishes or inability to meet the needs of a 12 top table. I like this place because it caters to the individual and to the couple. The place feels local, it feels cozy, and that’s because it is. I come here because i like the small town dinner. The place where the elderly couple comes and orders the same thing and the servers know their names. Overall the meal was good, coffee plentiful, and everything was hot. Now are there better places in San Antonio?(I know that this is located in Schertz but whatever) Yes I’m not ignorant. There is Magnolias, Pancakes Joes, The Guenther House and plenty others. But if you find your way driving up to Austin or in Schertz this is the place to go.

Abel’s didn’t really impress or «wow» me, rather it was satisfying enough for a quick lunch near home. I got the chicken sandwich, and it was pretty decent. Nothing to rave about. The place was extremely busy-it was a Sunday afternoon. The«diner» is pretty big with a country vibe to it. I’d probably only go back for breakfast since the lunch menu didn’t really appeal to me, and cause I’m just a sucker for breakfast food.

This place is for older customers. It is supposed to be homestyle. To some extent it is, it is so homestyle that you would be better off serving yourself. No drink until the food came. I asked for mashed potatoes as a side and that is extra. Instant potatoes must be going up in price. Then they were served without gravy. I guess that would have been extra too. The food was bland and tasteless. The food I was served could be eaten without teeth which is probably by design. If you are under 60 this may not be the place for you.

You’ll find Abel’s Diner in the corner of the Tri-Country Crossing strip center that features a new restaurant every couple years following the previous restaurant’s demise. It’s a pizza place, it’s a BBQ joint, surprise — now it’s a country diner. It’s difficult to see the restaurant from the I-35 frontage road so I’m doubtful they’ll attract much new business, but I suspect Abel’s will likely be the first long-term survivor in this site due to its loyal customer base that will surely follow them down the street to their new location. Abel’s claims most of their menu is homemade, and I believe them, but this doesn’t mean their soup is much better than Campbell’s or their«famous» yeast rolls taste any different than the dough you can purchase from your grocer’s freezer. Any visitor from the East Coast who stops by for a meal because they read«Diner» in the name will be disappointed in the lack of variety on the menu which is primarily burgers, a few sandwiches, some Texas staples such as Chicken Fried Steak, a couple fried seafood items, and some salads. Their breakfast items are pretty good, but in my opinion, it’s really hard to screw up bacon and eggs or an omelet. The interior design and wall décor are cute and homey with a country feel. The servers aren’t particularly professional, but they’re still friendly and helpful. The food isn’t imaginative or noteworthy, but it’s consistent and the quality is at least as good as you’ll find at Denny’s. My most recent visit was because they offered a Groupon and I probably won’t visit again until they offer another.

My lunch today was an old fashion burger with fries. The burger was moist and had a good flavor, but the fries were not fresh. In regards to the service by the waitress I was not impressed at all she did not make me feel welcome and made it an unpleasant experience.

This place was good… service was excellent so it made the food a little better. Ordered the Eggs Benedict plate with diner potatoes & while the potatoes were great the eggs Benedict was ok… not the best I have ever had… but it was pretty to look at. Husband ordered the biscuits & gravy & it seemed a little under seasoned… but overall enjoyable!

We decided to eat here for dinner tonight. Our first time. It was nice walking in. The hostess staff was very welcoming. We were seated at a table and the waitress came over and greeted us. She asked us what we would like to drink. It was pretty nice. She brought over our drinks and told us the specials. I ordered the Shrimp Ob boy. it was so good. My son had the special pork cutlet. It was also good. The green beans were freshly cooked not from the can. My daughter order the steak and shrimp with a side of soup. The chicken rice soup was amazing and had fresh herbs. My husband ordered the catfish and he ate the whole platter of food. Rating 1 star for facilities 1 star for service 1 star for food 1 star overall — star for the restrooms because i didn’t use them. Business was picking up when we were leaving but they had plenty of staff members standing around waiting to serve people. I just love how the chefs have chef outfits.

I would give zero stars if I could. I’m not going to wait 60 minutes for two entrees to go! Placed an order to go for lunch today. The cashier said it would be about 20 minutes because of the breakfast lunch change over. After 30 minutes, she came back and said it would be another 30 minutes. I asked for the manager, and he came out to say that they could go ahead and start my order now, but I would need to wait 30 or more minutes for it. I asked him if he would wait an hour for lunch specials, and he said that he wouldn’t. I had to ask for my money back. Like I’m going to cancel the order and just leave my money with them? Um, no. I finally got an insincere apology when he handed me my money. I told him I had been in the restaurant industry for 13 years, and that lunch items can be cooked along side breakfast; he got almost offended and said that it wasn’t the case there. When I asked if that was how he did business, he was very snide when he said, «Well, that’s how we’ve been doing business for 25 years.» Well, look how many bad reviews there are on this place. Obviously, I should have listened to the well deserved bad reviews. And maybe just maybe what worked 25 years ago doesn’t work today.
