For five years I had heard my wife talk about how amazing the Whipple Company Store and Museum was. So on our way for a weekend at the New River Gorge we stopped in so I could see myself. Needless to say I was blown away! What an absolute treasure. There was an informative tour about the coal company store, the lives of the miners and their families, the coal wars, and about the architecture. The man leading the tour was knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the area. I would recommend coming here to anyone!

Visited June 2012. Fascinating tour and very friendly folks working here. The significant otter and I were headed back home after a trip to Fayetteville and were driving the backroads when we stumbled across this place. Signs indicated it was open and tours were being held so we decided to check it out. So glad we did! We were the only ones on the tour, which lasts about 45 min and provides info on the workings of a coal company store. These folks/volunteers are doing good work, saved this piece of history from demolition, and have done much research on mining, the life of miners and their families, etc. The tour is $ 10/person which helps to provide fir renovations and upkeep(they explain much of this along the tour). History and architecture buffs will very much enjoy this.
