A short but comfortable ride. I recommend riding on top where you get a breeze and view. It’s beautiful. Leaving every hour, it’s very convenient. Not the cheapest but one of the only ways to get to the Pines sans yacht or helicopter.
If you’re taking the train from New York, make sure you get off the train quickly to take the $ 5 shuttle to the ferry. They will hold the ferry for the shuttles so as long as you get on that first series of shuttles, you’ll be fine.

The Quick: Clean ferry, polite staff, providing a quick ride to the beach. The view is fantastic and you can get a great tan sitting on top. Quick 15 – 20 minute ride, which I find to be quite an enjoyable boat ride.
Pro Tip: Make sure to apply sunscreen before you get on and sit on top.
The Damage: $ 16 round trip to the Pines.

It’s pretty much the only ferry service that I know of that takes you across the sound to the lovely Fire Island. They’re fairly prompt and there’s usually a line to get the tickets. As for seating it’s first come first served and they are pet friendly.
The ride it’s self is actually quite relaxing on a warm summer day, it’s about 15 minutes in total and poof your there.
