Was staying nearby on a weekend getaway and stumbled upon at menu at our Airbnb. Decided to drive over and check it out later that day and it seems like a total gem in a tiny town. I grew up just a little further north on the highway(Baraboo) so to see a fellow rural town celebrating organic, locally sourced food being served is awesome! The pizzas are pretty straight forward; nothing crazy about the recipes. You’ll recognize all the ingredients and have probably tasted some version of it before, but I can almost guarantee it didn’t taste anywhere as good as Windmill! Seriously amazing tasting food, good service and wait times, and reasonable prices! They nailed it on every account, and I just hope that they get the support they deserve from the surrounding community so that they can keep going! Two thumbs up.

Good pizza. Nice beer selection. Clean dining area. Family friendly. It can take a little longer than expected for food to be prepared, but never had to wait an unreasonable amount of time.

We ate there September 11, 2015. I don’t recall the name of the pizza that we ordered, but it had sweet Italian sausage, mushrooms and roasted onions on it and the word«slammer» was in the name. The pizza was excellent! I love thin crust pizza and the crust on our pizza was perfect. The Italian Sausage was very tasty. We will definitely go there again.

Eh, average pizza, wasn’t anything special. Prices are also way to high, not worth the price if you ask me.

The pizza was really good. I loved the fresh veggies. The staff was very friendly. They had a good selection of beer. They only had a couple kinds of wine.

Greeeeeat pizza joint tucked away in a quiet strip mall. We would not have discovered this gem without Unilocal. One can’t go wrong when a hot pie is made with love. I stuffed myself. Seek this place out.

It took us a long time to visit this pizza place for some reason but we were pleasantly surprised. We ordered garlic bread and a large pizza with pepperoni and mushrooms. We got the garlic bread in less than five minutes and the pizza a few minutes later. Both were very good. The pizza was as good as any of the New York-style pizzerias in Madison and really, any of this style anywhere that I’ve had. Crispy but chewy crust. Good balance of ingredients on the pizza. Not greasy. My one problem with this place, and this more of a longevity question, is its location. It’s in the middle of Sauk City and Prairie du Sac. But you could drive past this place a thousand times and not see it. It isn’t really hidden but a driver who is focused on the road will not see it. Plus, since it isn’t on highway 12 or 60, they miss out on a lot of traffic. Even with that, the one other couple that was in there when we were came up to the owner after their meal and said that they had been there during one of their precious vacations. They were back in Sauk on another visit and just had to come back. That’s a pretty good sign. Looking forward to trying their Sunday spaghetti dinner.

We came from Middleton because we had heard good reviews — for good reason! Pizza is DELISH and so worth the drive! Can’t wait to try more flavors. Hand-tossed dough is outstanding! Just the right combo of ingredients — nothing overpowering. Pallet is dancing!

Among the very best pizza I’ve had, and we eat a lot of pizza when we visit Wisconsin. Prepared with great skill and care. The sourdough crust is fabulous. Toppings are creative, fresh, and tasty. Patronize this place. Keep it prosperous! It’s a treasure.

Best pizza around! Gorman the owner is a culinary genius. I have known him for a long time and no he is not stopping on trying to make this one of the best pizzerias in the greater Madison area. Only problem is it is not in Madison. I recommend Windmill Pizzeria to anyone who wants to enjoy well thought out pizzas and take home some delicious sourdough bread. I promise you will not be let down!

The best garlic bread I’ve ever had at a restaurant. The pizza was great — nice crusty crust and great fresh cheese. Great fresh ingredients all around. They have an awesome beer selection and large TV to watch the game. They also have outdoor seating.

Went for a late night dinner around 10:15 tonight. They were supposed to close at 10 which were new hours but the owner says he’d stay open if people were coming. To start off he was incredibly friendly and personable. We got a drink and ordered a large pizza. There was one other table there. I’d been dying to try the place as I work in Prairie du sac but live in McFarland, it’s been a challenge. I’m so glad we went. The pizza was outstanding. I hate Pizza Hut and it has been the only Sauk Prairie option. Windmill pizza is Michelin dining compared to it. We shared a half pepperoni and half sausage pizza and the flavor profile was outstanding. I asked the owner if only they would deliver to my work… I would get them all the time. He said they are closed Monday but would deliver during lunch Tuesday-Friday if I called a day ahead.(They don’t open until 3pm those days he said) I definitely will do that soon. I urge all locals and semi locals to go here. Make the effort even if you have to pick it up. It’s far and away the best you’d get in the area and honestly it would be in the top 5% in Madison! They also have subs such as an Italian beef which I cannot wait to try. Hope this place makes it because it’s a great asset to the area.

We unexpectedly stopped for pizza last Sunday, coming back from a late-day hike at Devil’s Lake. We had our foodie kids with us, so Windmill was perfect for us. We had the cheese garlic bread(good — great cheese, and very good garlic flavor. We could tell they used recently harvested garlic) and a sausage and cheese pizza. The sausage was wonderful, the cheese on the pizza was really good. The crust was great. The sauce was a little sweet(per my four year old, I had to agree), but suited the pizza. We were the only ones in the restaurant and service was adequate. It’s the kind of place you order at the counter and sit down. We weren’t sure if we were supposed to get our own plates and silverware. We also liked the jar of water on the table, but would have liked more water. We will definitely be going back.

So good the first time, we had to come back on our last night in the area. The fig, soppressata, arugula pie was fantastic!!! The culinary highlight of our trip!

When on the prowl for good eats, it is extremely rare to venture west of Waunakee — until now, I never really considered Sauk to be destination dining. But after viewing the culinary eye candy posted on the Facebook page of Windmill Pizza and Sourdough for the past month, I decided to make the 25 minute drive to Prairie du Sac. The restaurant is located in the Railway Mall and is easy to miss if you are not familiar with the area. Parking is behind the building and there is only a small sign in front of the building. The dining area is large and seemed even larger as we were the only patrons dining inside at 1pm on a Wednesday. Other than suffering from some dim lighting, the interior of the restaurant appeared clean and well maintained. There also is outdoor seating that affords you a view of August Derleth Park that rests along the shore of the Wisconsin River. Things got off to a slow start — when we walked in, there was no one to greet our party, not host stand and no one at the counter. As we started to study the menu on the wall, the owner popped out from the kitchen to take our order. I ordered a have pepperoni /half cheese pizza for the kids and I settled on a sausage marinara sandwich($ 7). While we were dismayed when they delivered a full pepperoni pizza instead of the half cheese /half pepperoni we ordered, our server quickly remedied the situation by giving my daughter a massive slice of cheese pizza while they baked a small cheese pizza for her. Windmill could definitely benefit from a stronger front of house operation. Topping options take an artisan bent, including five types of house made sausages, several house made mozzarella cheeses and house pickled chilies. The lunch menu includes three sandwich options, but check their Facebook page for daily specials. They also offer a $ 5 slice and soda lunch special. As for the food, it is really, really solid. Served up on a homemade roll and loaded with sweet Italian sausage, red onion, green peppers, fresh mozzarella cheese and a healthy dose of home made. The quality of the ingredients was first rate, especially the finely seasoned Italian sausage. The onions needed a little more time in the sauté pan, they lacked the sweetness needed to compliment the sausage and the texture was in that half cooked no man’s land between raw and fully sautéed. I appreciate the simple pleasure of a bright, freshly made sauce and this one was so close to perfect — it just needed a touch of salt and a little more seasoning. While the bread was excellent, the ratio of crumb to crust seemed a little off — the sandwich could have benefited from more crumb to soak up the delicious sauce and balance the crusty exterior. Despite the minor flaws, it was one of the better sandwiches I consumed this summer. Both of my children loved their pizzas and for good reason, they were superb. While not quite in the rarified air of Grampa’s or Salvatore’s, Windmill Pizza belongs in the conversation of Top 10 pizzas in the Madison area. I am an unabashed crust snob and this pizza delivered the crunch and chew I expect from a great pizza. The use of organically grown tomatoes gave the perfectly seasoned sauce a bright, bold, tomato-first flavor. In addition to their homemade cheeses, they also use mozzarella from Grande,(just like Salvatore’s) which meant the cheese offered great texture and flavor. In addition, kudos for adding a couple of fresh basil leaves under the toppings for an added pop of flavor. My only complaint: they kitchen dollops the sauce instead of spreading it over the pizza, throwing the pizza out of balance at times(some bites had too much sauce — others had none at all). There are various evening specials, like $ 10 for a large, one topping pizza on Tuesdays and $ 1 topping night on Thursday. They also started offering wings on Wednesday evening. So now, I have several more reasons to occasionally head west from Waunakee to find a great, home cooked meal.

Really great pizza, nice beer selection, small but well crafted menu. A gem! Worth searching out in Sauk City.
