My daughter and I stopped in on a Saturday morning looking for some treats before we embarked on a hiking trip at nearby Indian Lake County Park. Armed with a certificate requiring us to spend at least $ 20, we had no problem hitting that threshold given the massive selection of products in the display case. After perusing through our options of baked goods(cookies, scones, doughnuts, bars, cheesecake and loaves of bread), we settled on a white chocolate raspberry scone, a blueberry muffin, a massive slab of shortcake and a couple loaves of bread. The Mixing Bowl also has a complete array of beverages, ranging from coffee drinks to smoothies, so we added a blueberry pomegranate smoothie and a chai tea latte to our bountiful order. While the staff person who assisted us was slightly reserved, she did do a thorough job of explaining that everything is made from scratch, using as many non-GMO and organic products as possible. She also mentioned the business brews its own vanilla and makes its own homemade yogurt. During our stay, I noticed the employees had a pleasant rapport with its many repeat customers that visited the store. The Mixing Bowl is housed in a building that has seen better days and the low ceiling, the dark brown and black tables and dark hued carpet made the interior seem darker than it actually was. To help counteract that effect, the owners applied bright yellow paint to the walls and added colorful works of art to brighten things up. Another nice touch is a large window that allows patrons to watch the activity in the kitchen. I noticed a screened gazebo behind the restaurant, but I did not avail myself to that facility since the chilly November conditions were not conducive to al fresco dining. The Mixing Bowl also has a dive through window for that that prefer their carbs and caffeine on the go. My daughter raved about her chai tea latte — she enjoyed both the full flavor and the creamy texture. My smoothie was just OK — the fruit flavors were muted, though I did enjoy the homemade yogurt mixed into my drink. However, the baked goods were superb. My white chocolate raspberry scone was packed with flavor, interior was moist, flakey and rich. While I would have preferred a little more crunch, it still was one of the better scones I’ve had in recent memory. My shortbread cookie had an abundance of crunch and buttery richness in spades. There are not many local options for this treat, so I anticipate many trips to Sauk to get my fix over the coming months. The same superlatives van by applied to my daughter’s blueberry muffin — the flavor from the home brewed vanilla elevates this muffin above many others I’ve recently consumed. My only disappointment with the baked goods was that one of my loaves of bread had mold on it when I examined it when I returned home. With so many delicious options, there is plenty of motivation to frequently make the journey down US Highway 12 to Sauk City.

Perfectly wonderful bakery! Everything is made from scratch, mixed by hand with the finest ingredients. It’s impossible to pick a favorite, but I never leave without at least one scotch shortbread(and I DON’T share!) Cakes, pies, brownies, cookies –anything you want. Don’t leave town without stopping.

Delicious baked goods, with a HUGE selection of doughnuts, rolls, pastries, cookies, and dessert bars. Very reasonable price for the quality… And the coffee. Oh, the coffee. I’ve tasted a lot of coffee, and the Mixing Bowl has consistently been top of the line, whether I’ve ordered drip, lattes, mochas, cappucinos. The array of syrup favors is huge, and the opportunity to create your own mocha is fun for sweet coffee lovers. If you have time to sit down, take a minute and enjoy the view of Water Street from the cozy couches. In the summer take your drinks and pastries out to the screened in back patio area — delightful! Service is fast and always with a smile. The Mixing Bowl has my custom every time I pass through Sauk City.
