Quaint little sight for those visiting Saugatuck, it’s one of the few hand-operated chain ferries left in the world. There has been a ferry at this site since 1838 transporting people from the town of Saugatuck across the Kalamazoo River. Take advantage of the crossing in order to hike up Mt Baldhead on the other side for great views of the area. The five minute crossing will cost you $ 1 per person. The ferry departs either side every 25 – 30 minutes so plan your return accordingly. The two college kids operating it when we went were very friendly, knowledgeable and were eager to answer all of our questions. The ferry and excursion around Mt Baldhead ended up being a great little activity during our recent vacation to the area.
