ROAN & BLACK Contemporary Gallery

First the space itself: a former mechanic’s garage turned contemporary gallery space – in a word: cool. Second: the range of artists on display. Usually I’ll gravitate to just 1 or 2 pieces when I visit a gallery. Here I end up liking (and wanting) numerous pieces from multiple artists. Third: the vibe is energizing…from the salon-​style of displaying the art, to the ambient music, to the warm greeting from the resident, name-​sake Border Collies. The owners Doug and John are approachable and know their artists as well as old friends…not to mention having an obvious knack for curating 2D and 3D pieces that feel perfectly suited for the lakeside/​cottage lifestyle. I highly HIGHLY recommend a visit. I stop in every time I’m in the area.

Love this gallery! A trip to Saugatuck is not complete without visiting Roan & Black. Whether you’re the serious collector or curious novice this is the ideal gallery. Their collection boasts nationally acclaimed artists across the country and there is always something new no matter how often you visit. The gallery is an extension of the owners’ own passion for art. John and Doug will quickly become friends, and you will not leave without an intimate knowledge of the artists and pieces you admire. Truly a must see.
