Their grilled cheese sandwich brought back childhood memories… or maybe it was the Kelloggs Rice Krispies Treat that did it? Toasty Melts serves grilled cheese sandwiches and soup from a retro looking food truck. They had four sandwiches($ 6 — $ 7) with the option of adding bacon or turkey, plus organic tomato soup($ 3). * Spicy cheddar sandwich($ 6) : Buttered thin white bread had tasty crisp edges, sandwich was thin and the cheese(2 kinds of cheddar) definitely oozed out in a good way. Liked the aioli, good bread, good cheese. The crunchy ruffled thick cut Kettle chips(not homemade) added a nice salty contrast. It was a pleasant surprise to receive a Rice Krispies Treat(packaged, not homemade). They should have wrapped the sandwich though. * Tomato soup: tangy, thick, vegan, with some soggy croutons, had good acidity, would have liked it better with some fresh herbs on top While I enjoyed my lunch, I found the sandwich too simple and the sides weren’t homemade. I’d like to see some more condiment/spread choices and dipping sauces.

Saw that Toasty Melts was in the FiDi today and I was going to skip it but as I walked by… the smell just called out to me. I ended up ordering the Irish Cheddar Bomb(chips included), tomato soup and a drink for $ 9. Irish Cheddar Bomb — Cheddar cheese, extra sharp cheddar AND garlic mashed potatoes & chives. I think it was the mashed potatoes that sold me on getting the sandwich in the first place but let me just say… that was genius! Although, I think it could use a little more but the garlic flavor was definitely there. The bread was toasted just right and I think I may have even tasted Parmesan on the bread(like what they do at Sizzlers). Regardless, there was more than a butter flavor on the sandwich. Soup — I’m not a fan of tomato soup. Hell, I don’t even like bloody mary’s but I thought I’d try it anyway. I actually liked it. It wasn’t spicy-spicy but it had a little kick to it. The only thing is, I’m not sure about the price. It was $ 3 and pretty small. I probably wouldn’t order this again, but I’ll def be back to try their other sandwiches. Next on my list is The Godfather and Papa Rizzo.

Today was my introduction to Toasty Melts food truck at the Eaters’ Choice Award event at Ft. Mason. I ordered the Godfather(grilled cheese with prosciutto — can’t remember what tyme of cheese) and it was very good. I also got the special sandwich for the day of the event which was Kickin’ Queso and I liked this way better because it had a kick with more spice. I hope they add it to their regular menu. If not, there were other items I would be willing to try. Since I was with a friend, we each had ½ of each sandwich and she also liked both of them. We agreed that the cole slaw they came with was very good. It was refreshing and seasoned perfectly and not with alot of mayo like many slaws are. In fact, we used some of the slaw on a pulled pork taco we got from Bacon Bacon. It added flavor to it and made that item better. One negative comment I have is that although very good, I felt that the prices were a bit higher than I would expect for a grilled cheese.

I had never heard of Toasty Melts before until I saw their truck at Movable Feast San Mateo. They had a huge line in front so I figured that this crowd must know that they are the dog’s balls or something. They offered 4 sandwiches so I chose the Big Apple and the Godfather. The Big Apple was spread with apple butter and the Godfather had pesto aioli and prosciutto in there. Gourmet grilled cheese is a treat and nothing quite tastes like it. I noticed that they had a grilled cheese with Irish cheddar and garlic mashed potatoes in there? Tempting as I was to get a carbs inside carbs sandwich, I had to pass. I did notice a dude eating it as I was waiting in line and he literally scarfed it down! I liked the Godfather more than the Big Apple maybe because the prosciutto added some meat flavor with the grilled cheese. The bread used was thick and each sandwich can be shared with someone else, if you want. Next time I have a chance to see this truck again, I will get their tomato soup to go along with my sandwich order.

Found the Toasty Melt truck downtown today and got to try a grilled cheese. I had The Big Apple, which was a phenomenal flavor combination of cheese and apple butter — it was like having a slice of hot apple pie with cheese melted on it… very cool. The small cup of coleslaw was dry and without flavor, so they could have skipped it or made something with more pizazz. Otherwise, something cool and different to try.

Went to the Hiller Museum for the first time today for lunch and decided on Toasty Melts. I saw that they had cucumber lemonade and I had to have it! It sounded delicious, my eyes veered to the left and I read the description of The Godfather sandwich, and had to get that too! Yes I am an easy sell! They were out of cole slaw so they offered us a tomato dipping sauce, it was chunky but easy to dip my sandwich in. I don’t really like cole slaw that much so that was fine by me. The Godfather was so cheesy and delicious, and aoili was great, I forgot there was proscuitto in there, but I did taste it, for me the star is the cheese and bread, not the meat. Delicious, thank you Toasty Melts!

Well… my sandwich sure was Toasty. After a longggg OTG hiatus, I finally went back with a gf of mine. After chowing down at 3SUM I decided I wanted to try Toasty Melts even though I was pretty full already. After glancing over the menu I decided on The Godfather. How can I say no to prosciutto??? I think I should have said no. The Godfather consisted of basil aoli, prosciutto, and mozzarella on heavily buttered white bread. BUMMER. My grilled cheese was cooked wayyyy too long. Some of the crust was so hard it was almost like a croûton! The basil aoli was good but not great. Sandwich would have been much better with gruyère rather than mozzarella. Prosciutto portion was skimp. Would have been better on some other kind of bread, too. I was only able to finish half at OTG and brought the other half home for later. For $ 7 I could have bought a loaf of bread and some cheese and made some better grilled cheese at home. and a lot more of them. I’ve made similar sandwiches with pesto, prosciutto and havarti that taste wayyyy better. How disappointing.

I tried them at the fan fest before today’s Stanford football home opener. I had the fromage-a-trois(3 cheese grilled cheese) which came with a very small side of potato chips. It was perfectly fine, but didn’t taste any better than a grilled cheese I could make at home. For $ 6 I would have expected something better. They did have a few things you could pay to add on, like tomatoes. I wish they had apple slices, that would have gone so nicely on this sandwich. Lines at the fan fest were completely insane(not their fault) but they were also doing a terrible job keeping up with it. They warned us the wait might be 15 minutes, but we waited upwards of 20. I thought the whole point of a food truck was quick food? They also sold out of the sandwich my friend wanted(the one with mashed potatoes in it). I guess they were just really unprepared for the crowd.

This is a review of lunch from Toasty Melts food truck at OTG at St. Mary’s. There really wasn’t a line. The person taking the order was professional and cordial. The sandwich was ready in about five minutes They only had one selection for chips. The beverage selection was also very limited. I selected the Godfather. This was a sandwich with prosciutto and mozzarella. This was a good sandwich. The ingredients were fresh. It was a very cheesy sandwich which I like. The toast was pretty much just the right kind of crispy. The side of mixed greens was nice. This was a good sandwich. But while simplicity can rule the day, I do not think this sandwich stacks up to a sandwich from Mixt Greens and isn’t any better than a sandwich from Specialty’s. While it will not break your wallet in half, at about $ 8, it is also not a bargain. I would not go out of my way to visit this truck. The sandwich is good but not great. All things considered, the price is a little high.

I’m between 3 and 4 stars on this one and sadly I’m going to have to go 3. Toasty Melts sounds appealing, and I had been following them on Facebook quite some time since I mean, I love street food and I love love love grilled cheese. But, overall it didn’t really deliver. Tried them at SJ Movable Feast one week. I got two sandwiches, both with bacon — One had mozzarella, basil, and tomato, and the other had their St George cheese. The bread on both was toasted very well, btu I felt like the cheese inside was not good for grilled cheese. If you were to split open the bread, the cheese would be on one side. I feel like instead it should ooze out. My feeling is that it was not melted enough, and the sandwich was rushed. Which is why I am disappointed. Flavor-wise, it was good, but not great. Definitely better than standard grilled cheese, but at the same time, grilled cheese is one of those things that, for the most part, you don’t want to deviate from the standard too much. Now, don’t get me wrong, I add various ingredients and use different cheeses and breads and seasonings when I make them at home… I like a gourmet grilled cheese by all means… But, there is room in my heart(and stomach) for just an old fashioned grilled cheese oozing bright orange American or Cheddar cheese. So yeah, they’re onto something here, and it’s a good concept, and the bread was very good. But something about the execution was lacking for me. All that being said, if I see the truck again I would definitely give them another chance.

So yesterday I found out I like tomato soup. I know, I know… who’s NEVER had tomato soup before!?! Well the answer is ME! I never have before Toasty Melts. Yesterday at the soft opening for OTG: FiDi I decided to try Toasty Melts out. It was cold out so it was a perfect time for some warm soup. I ordered The Godfather(all sandwiches come with a small salad), a cup of spicy tomato soup and a snickerdoodle swirl cookie(from Sweet Constructions, sold on the toasty melt truck). The Godfather– Basil aioli, mozzarella and prosciutto. Its a wonderful combination that they put together here. The sandwiches is oozing with melted mozzarella, but at the same time compliments the prosciutto and basil aioli. Very good. Spicy tomato soup– I have no comparisons to any other tomato soup, cause honestly I never thought I would like it. But this has made me a fan. Salad– Where’s the dressing? Maybe they forgot it? I dont know… but the croutons were good when I put added ‘em to my soup. Sweet Constructions Snickerdoodle swirl– I love snickerdoodles… this one was good. Nothing spectacular but I enjoyed it.

Pretty good flavors BUT super skimpy sandwiches for the price!!! My coworkers and I were very disappointed because of how thin it was! Not worth the $ 7 for their sandwiches when they stuff it with paper thin slices of cheese & meats. I got the Godfather & could NOTBELIEVE it only had one thin slice of proscuitto w/cheese & simple sourdough bread. At least use a more decadent type of bread to make it special/different?!

Toasty Melts brought it on like Solange Knowles in that direct-to-DVD sequel. After a mediocre grilled cheese experience at Eat Curbside, I was hesitant to try street grilled cheese again. Thankfully this place got it spot on with perfectly crispy bread exterior, fluffy bread interior and a generous amount of melty cheese! Irish Cheddar Bomb: If only the Irish Republican Army created such awesome taste explosions! I like cheese on potatoes and I like cheese on bread, but I would have never thought to combine them for fear of starch overload. The smear of smooth garlic mashed potatoes works perfectly between the crispy bread and gooey cheddar. Almost makes the cheese taste like cotswold with the tic tac inducing spices. A must for any grilled cheese explorer. 3 Cheese: Because you wouldn’t pay $ 4 bucks for a Kraft Single! Cheddar and Monterrey Jack are the usual suspects for easy melting cheese(that isn’t processed cheese product) and the smoked gouda adds a little bit of a kick. Great choice for retro comfort, but doesn’t really highlight their innovation.

Man, now that they have the truck, it is on! Had the Irish Cheddar Bomb(two types of cheddar with mashed potatoes) and it was a smoky, cheesy explosion of flavor in my mouth! Genius! For old times sake, I got the 3 cheese for the kids. That was a total Fail — they ended up taking half of my bomb! *shaking fist* Only wish they came around the Brisbane Marina more often. Once a month is not enough, IMHO.

I’m a sucker for grilled cheese, so I was excited to see Toasty Melts at a recent event I attended. They seemed to have a few newfangled and very complex sounding varieties, but the lady behind the counter said her favorite was the classic 3 cheese. Never one to turn down a recommendation, I went with it and enjoyed it very much! I did think it was weird that it came with a ‘side’ of a handful of baby carrots thrown into the bag with the sandwich so they were a bit warm and soggy… I liked that they threw in some veggies with their very rich sandwich but maybe a separate baggie next time? The grilled cheese itself was warm, crispy, and toasty/melty… so the place stays true to its name. I wouldn’t say there was anything so unique or different about this truck, but they know what people like and they provide it(minus the warm baby carrots maybe)!

Are you serious? The ABC melt was puny, there were barely any apple slices(I found them. they were sliced thinner than beef rib eye for shabu!), and I suspect the sandwiches are pre-made. When I saw the sandwich, it wasn’t gooey. The cheese was hard. When I bit into it, I could barely taste the apples. All I got was a slight sharpness of cheddar, then bread. My friend had the one with prosciutto in it — let me tell you I have never seen PINK prosciutto before. I thought it was mortadella or baloney. Disappointing food truck for Off The Grid Civic Center.

Toasty Melts debuted their grilled cheese sandwich cart this evening at Little Skillet’s happy hour event. I have to give it 5 stars, well-made comfort food in the middle of the street, at reasonable prices is just awesome. On the menu($ 3 – 4 each): — Toasty melt(3 cheeses — cheddar, gouda, and monterey jack) — ABC melt(apple slices, bacon, and cheddar) — Strawberry sweet mess(cream cheese, nutella, and strawberry slices) Who knows, perhaps someone else will be inspired to open a tomato soup cart to go with these cheese sandwiches. Get updates via Twitter. ** Update: In May 2011, this formerly unassuming street cart vendor turned into a brand new huge flashy red food truck. Food quality and taste are not the same as before, because they’ve changed their ingredients supplier. I liked the bread they used in the past much better, it was also larger than the current version. And sadly, prices have doubled(probably to pay for the fancy new truck), so it’s no longer a good value. New competition is another factor. In my opinion, this vendor is no match to new places like American Grilled Cheese Kitchen(opened in 2010), or The Melt(opened 2011) with an upcoming wave of grilled cheese shops and food trucks. Therefore, I’m downgrading my original rating to 3 stars.
