I’m writing on behalf of my mother, who has resided at the Sequoias since 2008. To quote her, «This is one of the best things that’s ever happened to me in my entire life.» My mother is a vigorously independent woman with an exuberant life of work, friends and travel. When she became widowed a decade ago, she decided to stay in her home state. But after some years, she decided to move to San Francisco. She explored all of her options. While living in her own apartment she visited and considered all of the retirement communities in San Francisco. After careful consideration, she applied to the Sequoias and was accepted. She was a little reluctant moving in because it symbolized the end to a certain way of living, i.e. on her own. But within a few months, she became an integral part of the community. She loves the Sequoias for so many reasons: elegant décor, diverse and friendly community, staff who pamper her and and show genuine caring, resident involvement, spectrum of cultural programs, fitness activities, volunteer opportunities, gourmet dining with sit-down and self-serve options, weekly housekeeping service, the security of various levels of care, etc. etc.(In fact, she had to use both the skilled and the assisted living levels for short periods and she appreciated being able to «come home» rather than go to another facility for rehab or recovery.) Being the people-person that my mother is, she appreciates those qualities in others. She will often mention how conscientious and kind Tina(front office person) is with every resident. Tina gives everyone – residents and visitors alike – a big smile and a listening ear, while also handling non-stop phones and office routines. My mother has the highest respect and affection for Candiece(marketing director) for her patience and support through the process of selection, application, and personalizing her new living quarters. Research has shown that seniors benefit, and in fact live longer, from maintaining friendships, staying physically active, eating healthy, and being involved in the community, all of which are integral aspects of living at the Sequoias. Being her daughter, I’m eternally grateful to the Sequoias for enriching my mother’s life.
