One of the best kept secrets in town. 90% of the plays I see in any other major theater in town or in the Eastbay is so mainstream. The few plays I have see in the little theater, put on by the students, were so touching and so exciting to watch. I think the pros should come and watch. They could learn a thing or two from the aspiring actors.

As the name suggests, the venue is little. But, that makes the experience all the more intimate. The dynamic range is there — it can get very loud, and it can be as quiet as a void. And there’s nothing like being just a few feet from the performers, to really draw you into the play. I watched their Spring 2012 production of Spring Awakening here, and I’m still in awe. To start with, the set was beautiful and they really utilized the space to the maximum. The lighting was stunning. The casting was excellent. Sure, you’ll have some pitchiness here and there, and the ensemble dancing isn’t like a dance company, but I find that little bit of imperfection makes the performance more human, and they really make up for it with youth, energy and vigor. At one part of the play, I was literally brought to tears. And for the most part, the leads and a lot of the ensemble are on par with professional AEA actors. For $ 15(or $ 8 for students) there is no better deal for your dollar.

I really love this theater. Its intimate and yet can seat quite a few people, the acoustics are spot on and the exits are easy to get to in an emergency. The productions here are really well put together, well rehearsed and always look like a great deal of thought and energy have been put into them. Love it.

This little theater is the setting of some pretty great productions. I recently saw Engaged here and it was well… engaging! I highly recommend checking it out.
